A new hoax is doing the rounds of India’s favourite messaging app, WhatsApp, claiming that a user was billed for Rs 27,718 by Reliance Jio while she was on the Jio Welcome offer. According to the image of the fake bill, Ayunuddin Mondal from Kolkata is required to pay this ridiculously large amount on the account of using 554.38 GB of data and 44 minutes of voice calling.

Considering that Reliance Jio is offering charge-free service for the duration of the Jio Welcome Offer (valid upto December 31), it is not possible for a user to receive a bill. Even while the meticulously photoshopped bill would make you believe that it is authentic, rest assured that you will not be receiving a shock like this in your mail tomorrow.

Reliance Jio in its Welcome Offer is giving unlimited free 4G Internet to users, with a data cap of 4GB per day – following which the speed drops to 128Kbps. On top of that, Jio is offering unlimited voice calling (over VoLTE) throughout the country along with free national roaming.

For Jio users who now feel at ease knowing that the bill was fake, there is more good news. According to a Business Insider report, Reliance Jio will be extending the Welcome offer to March 2017 in an announcement expected to be made on December 28.

Reliance Jio went live for all users in the country on September, and has since got millions of subscribers. Many of these subscribers have started complaining that the 4G Internet speeds have taken a serious hit, with some comparing it to slower than 3G speeds. But hey, it is still absolutely free.

Reliance Jio is also in the midst of war with other telecom operators and has been accusing them of not giving Jio enough inter-connect points. Reliance Jio claims the calls drops on its networks are high because other telecom operators are not sharing enough inter-connect points, an allegation denied by other players.
