Worldwide shipments of Personal Computers (PCs) declined 9.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2016, and shipment volume fell below 65 million units globally, says a report on Gartner.

According to Gartner all the major regions showed year-over-year shipment declines, with Latin America showing the steepest drop. The report says that PCs are not being adopted in new households, especially in emerging markets thanks to the gaining popularity of smartphones.

“The deterioration of local currencies against the US dollar continued to play a major role in PC shipment declines. Our early results also show there was an inventory buildup from holiday sales in the fourth quarter of 2015,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

In terms of individual vendors, Lenovo maintained the number 1 position, even though it saw an overall 7.2 percent decline in shipments. Lenovo saw growth in North America, and has shown double-digit shipment growth in the US for the last four quarters.

HP, which was split into Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP Inc at the end of 2015, came in a number two.

Dell takes the third spot in the list, seeing a decline of 0.4 percent in the first quarter, which was much better than the global industry average. Dell shipments increased in North America and Japan, says the report. Also Dell beat HP Inc to become the number one vendor in the US market based on shipments.
