Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Windows team have been talking about Windows 10 being a service-driven platform rather than a piece of software which once installed and can be left as is. Windows 10 is a radical change where even Settings is an Universal Windows app. So in future, Microsoft can just update Settings individually not the entire system.

Microsoft has cleared that Windows team will send new updates at regular intervals so that your system feels new every time with latest updates. This particular announcement is bit tricky nonetheless. If you have a capped data connection at Home then you won’t realise when the updates are downloaded. Microsoft will only let you choose when to reboot. The update and install part will happen at the Windows Update end. Update won’t download over a metered connection (where charges may apply).

Earlier, Windows would come with following update options – Install updates automatically, Download updates but let me choose whether to install them, Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them and Never check for updates. This will get tricky for a lot of users but it will essentially be useful in the longer run.

More than half of Windows users are still running Windows 7 and the US Army pays several million dollars every year to keep Microsoft supporting Windows XP. With the service model and automatic updates enabled out of the box, Microsoft will have to leverage less work towards older Operating Systems. The company has set a goal of getting billion users running Windows 10 within three years.
