Meta has announced the expansion of its Horizon Worlds online game beyond virtual reality (VR) into the realms of mobile and the web, marking a major step towards making the metaverse more accessible to a broader audience.
Until now, Horizon Worlds had been exclusive to VR headsets, but Meta’s recent announcement reveals plans to roll out the platform’s early access version on mobile and the web. The company stated that Super Rumble, a limited experience within Horizon Worlds, is now accessible through the Meta Quest app on Android, with iOS availability expected in the coming weeks. Additionally, early access can be obtained via any web browser at horizon.meta.com.
While this initial rollout may seem modest, with Super Rumble being the sole available experience at launch, Meta has assured users that more games will be introduced in the coming months.
This expansion aligns with Meta’s broader vision of a metaverse that can be accessed by all kinds of users on various devices. The company emphasised that while VR headsets offer an immersive experience, multiple entry points are essential.
This move has been long-awaited, with Meta discussing the possibility of a mobile and web version publicly last year. Vishal Shah, Meta’s metaverse VP, revealed that they had a working mobile version that was held back due to its VR-centric nature. Shah stated in an interview with Lowpass, “It was a little bit too much of a VR game on mobile as opposed to a mobile-native experience.”
Meta is expected to reveal more about its Horizon Worlds and metaverse ambitions at its upcoming Connect conference scheduled for September 27 and 28.
