Back in 2023, Google introduced a virtual try-on feature powered by AI to help shoppers see how the clothes they want to buy would look on them. Now, the tech giant has announced that, ahead of the festive season, it is bringing the Virtual Apparel Try on tool to India.

In a blog post, Google said Indian online shoppers can now “virtually try billions of apparel listings on themselves, just by uploading a photo.” For those wondering, the Virtual Apparel Try on tool lets users see how they look in tops, bottoms, jackets and even shoes, all by uploading a photo of themselves.

Shoppers can also see how a clothing item will drape, stretch, cling, fold and form wrinkles and shadows on a wide range of models and help users find matching clothing pieces in different sizes, styles and colours. Powered by the company’s custom AI model for fashion, which “understands both the human body and nuances of clothing”, users can try the Virtual Apparel Try On tool by simply pressing the “try it on” icon that appears on product listings on Google.

Not only can you try multiple items, switch colours and compare looks, but it also lets you bookmark favourites and share with friends and family so they can see how the clothing you like looks on you.

Google’s Virtual Apparel Try On tool might also help shoppers eliminate the hassle of returning apparel, as they often struggle to see if an item fits them. As for brands and retailers, it might help boost sales as customers will know how a clothing item looks on them even before they buy it. One thing to keep in mind is that the ‘try it on’ button will only appear on certain supported listings, which means you won’t be able to try on any clothes from any platform.

Like Google, Glance also has an AI-powered shopping app that lets users virtually try on clothing and offers personalised suggestions based on their interests.
