Apple Music is out with the new iOS 8.4 update. The Music streaming service is one of the most important updates that the company has rolled out since it acquired Beats Music in 2014.

Apple Music features a 24/7 Beats live radio station dedicated entirely to music, which will be broadcast in over 100 countries. In addition this, there is the live streaming service which will be free for the first three months.

The service will cost Rs 120 per month for individuals and Rs 190 for a family of six sharing and it can be used across devices. So if you’re an Apple family, the family plan actually sounds like a good deal. You will be prompted as you log-in on which plan you wish to choose. Apple will charge you from September once the three month free trial period ends.

We updated to Apple iOS 8.4 and once the update is installed it completely transforms the Apple Music app. Apple Music now has the following sections.

For You

This is the section where you can choose from artists, genres that you love so that Apple can show you the kind of music you love. Apple has added Bollywood, Tamil Music, Indian Classical, Sufi, Indian Pop, Devotional and Spiritual as well to the usual genres. Once you pick the genres, artists, this music will be reflected in the tab.

Once you choose you artists, it will get further sub-divided in to Apple Music, which will have more genres and My Music where your past searches, artists you’ve heard earlier will show. You can also just type a particular song name and it will appear and then just start playing it.  So far we’re seeing a fairly wide choice.

Users can even add songs that they are streaming to their My Music tab. You have the option of removing it as well.

This has music from new artists, new albums across genres.

The Beats 24/7 Radio station is live in India as well. There too you can choose from genres of music to stream and play or just listen to what the radio is playing.

This has information around artists you’ve downloaded or liked on iTunes earlier. You can choose artists to follow as well.

My Music

This tab has all your earlier music from Apple Music app.

The Apple Music catalogue will offer over 30 million songs and it says users can “stream any song, album or playlist you choose”. Users will also have the option of asking Siri to pick a song.

We will have more to say on the Apple Music service once we’ve used it more. But so far the streaming and song choice seems to be quite varied.
