The new Samsung Galaxy flagship smartphones were launched in India on Monday with almost the same prices as we had called latest last week. The Samsung Galaxy S6 will be available at Rs 49,900 (32 GB), Rs 55,900 (64GB), Rs 61,900 (128GB) while the Galaxy S6 Edge will be priced Rs 58,900 (32 GB), Rs 64,900 (64 GB) and Rs 70,900 (128 GB).
We told you that the pricing of the S6 would be “between Rs 49,990 and Rs 54,999” while the Galaxy S6 Edge would cost “between Rs 64,990 and Rs 69,999”.
No, we are not thumbing our chest. Just trying to underline how easy is has become to predict how Samsung will price its flagship smartphones. Yes, we would have loved for Samsung to surprise us with a superb price, but then that would be so beneath the Korean tech giant.
In the past year, there have been a handful of smartphone that preferred to go with pricing that seemed below what one would actually pay for them. In fact, Chinese startups Xiaomi and OnePlus have this as their USP. Anyone who buys their phones is happy that he has got bang for his buck.
Take the case of the OnePlus One. Almost the same specs as the Samsung Galaxy S5, but at half the price. That is the world Samsung is in. I guess this realisation has not sunk in yet.
Of course, cutting price to gain more buyers in markets like India would have meant lower profits. But if Samsung can’t do it, who can.
Now, just close your eyes and imagine how you would react to a Samsung Galaxy S6 priced at Rs 39,900. Feels good right?
But no such luck.
The two phones were unveiled recently at its Galaxy Unpacked Event 2015 in event in Barcelona, Spain ahead of Mobile World Congress 2015. They came in for rave reviews from those who got a hands on there. My first impression was that the phones were stunning from a design perspective, especially coming from Samsung. They feel premium and powerful. However, I could not figure out the utility of the edge in the S6, though the phone charges a huge premium for the same.
