Yes, the new Apple iPhones are here. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are larger than any other phone from Apple so far, but what is really new. We take a look.

Retina HD Display: This is the new Apple standard for smartphone screens. The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with 1334 x 750p resolution. So there will be 38 percent more viewing area than iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, features a 5.5-inch Retina HD display with 1920 x 1080p resolution — this is 88 per cent more viewing area and nearly three times the pixels than iPhone 5s. Apple claims the Retina HD displays “offer advanced technologies including higher contrast for deeper blacks and dual-domain pixels for more accurate colors at wider viewing angles”.

Thinnest iPhones: At 6.8mm and 7.1mm, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the thinnest phones from Apple. The unibody enclosure of anodized aluminum flows into the shaped glass display, giving users a smooth and continuous surface. The thin build also makes the phones easy to hold.

A8 Chip: Apple’s own A8 chip comes with second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture for faster performance and power efficiency. Plus, there is Apple’s new graphics technology Metal that lets developers take performance of the A8 chip even further to bring console-class 3D games to iPhone. The chip’s image signal processor enables advanced camera and video features, claims Apple.

Apple Pay: Giving a big boost to NFC, both phones will debut Apple Pay, “an easy way to securely pay for physical goods and services in stores or apps with just the touch of a finger”. The feature allows users to securely and conveniently in stores by simply holding the phone near the contactless reader while keeping a finger on Touch ID. For in app purchases they will have to just touch the finger scanner and not enter credit card or shipping information. Apple says all payment information will private, encrypted and stored securely in the Secure Element chip inside the new iPhones.

New iSight Camera: The new sensor features Focus Pixels for faster autofocus so that you don’t miss anything. And iPhone 6 Plus users will get optical image stabilization that compensates for hand shake in low light and works with iOS 8 to reduce subject motion. High-definition video on the iPhone improves with faster frame rates up to 60fps for 1080p video and 240fps for slo-mo, as well as continuous autofocus, cinematic video stabilization and time-lapse video. The FaceTime HD camera now captures over 80 percent more light with a new sensor, larger f/2.2 aperture and advanced new features including burst mode and HDR video.

iOS 8: New features in OS 8 — which was first announced a few months back — include QuickType keyboard, a new Health app, Family Sharing and iCloud Drive. With more than 4,000 new APIs, iOS 8 allows developers to further customize the user experience with major extensibility features and robust frameworks such as HealthKit and HomeKit.
