Samsung at its Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event in Barcelona, Spain ahead of Mobile World Congress 2015 unveiled its flagship Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 smartphones. The company also introduced Samsung Pay and Gear VR Innovator Edition powered by Oculus.
The new Galaxy S6 Edge is the first smartphone to feature curved display on both sides (or edges). Samsung said that the new Galaxy smartphones are made out ‘stronger metal’ and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection and claimed “This tough will not bend.”
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge sports a similar spec sheet apart from the Dual Edge, battery and a slight difference in dimensions. The S6 is powered by a 2,550mAh battery while the S6 Edge has a 2,600mAh battery. Both comes with built-in wireless charging- WPC1.1(4.6W Output) & PMA 1.0(4.2W) compatible.
The new Galaxy devices run on Android 5.0 Lollipop OS along with quad 2.1GHz + quad 1.5Ghz, octa-core application processor. The devices sport a 5.1-inch Quad HD(2560×1440)Super AMOLED display at 577ppi.
On the memory front, the S6 and S6 Edge comes with 3GB LPDDR4 RAM and will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB internal storage variants with support for Universal Flash Storage 2.0.
Both the devices comes with a 16MP OIS rear camera and a 5MP front camera. Camera features include: Quick Launch, Tracking AF, Auto Real-time HDR(Front & Rear) , F1.9, Low Light Video(Front & Rear), High Clear Zoom, IR Detect White Balance, Virtual Shot, Slow Motion, Fast Motion, Pro Mode, Selective Focus.
On the connectivity front, the devices offer WiFi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5GHz), HT80 MIMO(2×2) 620Mbps, Dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile hotspot, Bluetooth v4.1, A2DP, LE, apt-X, ANT+, USB 2.0, NFC and IR Remote.
“The Galaxy S6 edge, particularly, shows unique and outstanding beauty while also providing a solid grip and an immersive viewing experience with the world’s first curved display on both sides. Its glass body, made from the toughest glass to date, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, is available in an array of colorful jewel tones, including White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Blue Topaz and Green Emerald, which elicit a unique visual texture as it reflects natural light,” said Samsung in a statement.
The new smartphones will be available from April 10 in 20 countries.
Samsung Pay allows consumers to transition to secure mobile payments. “To date, mobile wallets have had extremely low acceptance with merchants utilizing conventional magstripe terminals. With Samsung Pay, consumers can now utilize their mobile devices to pay at existing point-of-sale terminals,” according to a statement.
Samsung leverages both Near Field Communication (NFC) and a new proprietary technology called Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) to make mobile payments.
Samsung has partnered with major payment networks such as MasterCard and Visa. Additionally, Samsung is working to expand the partnership ecosystem for Samsung Pay with key financial partners globally, including American Express, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase, and U.S. Bank.
Samsung also introduced its Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6, powered by Oculus. Optimized for both the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and its 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, Gear VR Innovator Edition lets users engage with high resolution movies, TV shows, VOD services and photos. The Gear VR can now be powered with its USB port for extended usage time. Gear VR content is available for download via the Oculus Store. Users have an extensive selection of optimized, localized virtual reality content from top-tier creators including VR games and 360 degree including a new performance from Cirque du Soleil, Kurios.
