Video + First Look: The new Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have been launched by the company with new Dual-Pixel camera technology.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have been launched by the company. A PTI report says the smartphones will be available in India by second week of March. Samsung has not yet confirmed the pricing of the new S7, S7 edge smartphones, however the phones are up for pre-order in US, Europe.

Samsung is also giving away the Gear VR ( costs $99) headset free to users who pre-order the smartphones in some select parts of the world.

In terms of design, the Galaxy S7, S7 edge feature the same glass-metal design we saw in the S6 series, but what has changed is the rear camera with a new technology that the company is calling ‘Dual Pixel.’

Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge ‘Dual Pixel’ helps deliver sharp, and brighter pictures even in low-light, says the company. Additionally the camera has a faster shutter speed, and a more accurate auto-focus, even in low-light conditions. Samsung has also introduced what it called ‘Motion Panorama’ mode, which brings movement to traditional panoramic photos.

Samsung also says that the new S7 series comes with a Game Launcher, a new add-on feature for gamers, which allows users to manage battery consumption and minimize notifications. Additionally, users can record their gaming experience or share their screen to play with others.

The 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 and 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 edge are constructed with 3D glass and metal and feature an ‘Always-On Display.’ The phones are IP68 water and dust resistant.

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 features a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, run Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), come with 4GB RAM (LPDDR4) RAM and will have 32 and 64 GB versions. Samsung has also brought back micro-SD slots to the S7 series, which can support up to 200 GB of extra space.

The Galaxy S7 series has a ‘Dual Pixel’ 12 megapixel rear camera with F1.7 aperture with Smart OIS feature. The front camera is five megapixel with F1.7 aperture. The battery in the Galaxy S7 is 3,000 mAh and supports fast-charging along with wireless charging.

Sensors in the Samsung Galaxy S7 are: Accelerometer, Proximity, RGB Light, Geo-magnetic, Gyro, Fingerprint, Barometer, Hall and HRM.

The new Galaxy S7 edge has the same specs, except for a bigger 5.5-inch display and a 3600 mAh battery. It also features the dual-edge screen seen in the previous series.

Samsung has not introduced USB-Type C charging for the new smartphones as was rumoured.

The processor of the Samsung Galaxy S7 series has not been confirmed either. The Galaxy S7 appears to have two processors, one is a 64-bit octa-core processor (2.3GHz Quad + 1.6GHz Quad) and the second a 64-bit quad-core processor (2.15GHz Dual + 1.6GHz Dual). Samsung has not revealed whether it is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 as rumours had indicated.

Samsung says the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be available starting mid-March 2016. The new Galaxy S7 series also features Samsung KNOX, fingerprint scanning, Samsung Pay works with NFC (Near Field Communication), and Barcode technology as well.
