Motorola will launch its first modular smartphone, Moto Z in India on October 4. The company has started sending out media invites for the same.

Earlier, Motorola had confirmed that it will launch Moto Z just before Diwali. Motorola’s Moto Z is available in three variants – Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play. Moto Z and Moto Z Force were launched at company’s Tech World Conference while Moto Z Play was made official at IFA 2016.

Motorola sees modular smartphones as the way forward and is doubling down on its efforts. In an interview with, Lenovo’s Ken Wong said, “We believe our solution is the most advanced right now and the competition is playing catch up.” He added, “We see a demand for such design like with the Mods. I don’t think competition can catch up with us in a short period of time. And if they do, we are confident we can stay ahead. If more people join and create that category we’re super happy.”

With Google confirming the death of its Project Ara and admitting the lacklustre demand for modular devices, Motorola’s approach is definitely setting a new trend. Apart from modular design, Motorola has managed to make Moto Z and Moto Z Force a top-end flagship. Moto Z features a 5.5-inch Quad HD display while Z Force gets same 5.5-inch QHD display with shatterproof glass on top.

Moto Z is just 5.2 mm thick while the Moto Z Force is 7mm at its thickest point. Both Moto Z and Moto Z Force come with 4GB and option of 32 or 64GB storage. Moto Z is backed by a smaller 2,600mAh battery while Z Force gets a larger 3,500mAh battery.

Moto Z Play, on the other hand, is a toned down version of Moto Z Force. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. There is 3GB RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and 32GB storage. Moto Z Play is 7mm thick and weighs 165 grams.

Moto Z Play sports a 16MP primary camera with dual-LED flash, phase detection and laser autofocus. There is also a 5MP front camera. While Moto Z and Z Force skip 3.5mm headphone jack, Moto Z Play gets the proprietary audio jack. Yes, you can bring your old headphones along with this one. Moto Z Play is backed by a 3,510mAh battery with support for snap on battery mod.

The whole Moto Z series is exciting in terms of smartphone evolution and form spiritual successor to Razr series. The most obvious thing here would be price. While the smartphones are truly innovative in terms of technology, pricing will play key role in India’s cost conscious market.
