The iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus are now officially available in India, starting at prices of Rs 62,000 and Rs 72,000, respectively. And it seems, at least on first look, that India is the most expensive market for Apple’s new iPhones.
In the US, the unlocked iPhone 6s starts at $649, around Rs 41,993. The 128GB model of the 6s goes costs $849 in the US, which is Rs 54,939. Given that the iPhone 6s 16GB starts at Rs 62,000 going all the way to Rs 82,000, in the US the smartphone is at least a good Rs 20,000 cheaper.
Similarly, the iPhone 6s Plus starts at $749 (Rs 48,463) going all the way to $949 (Rs 61, 404), which means that with the bigger screen device, you’ll be paying nearly Rs 30,000 more in India.
In India, the iPhone 6s starts at $958 if you just re-convert the price, while the iPhone 6s Plus starts at $1112.
In the United Kingdom, the iPhone 6s starts at £539 (Rs 53,844) going all the way to £699 (Rs 69,828), while the 6s Plus starts at £619 (Rs 61,836) to 789 (Rs 78,818).
So while the iPhone costs nearly $300 (£539 is around $832) more in UK than it does in US, if you were buying it there, it would still be cheaper than buying it in India, based solely on direct conversions.
In Singapore, the iPhone 6s starts at S$1,048 (Rs 48,992) to S$ 1388 (Rs 64,886), while the iPhone 6s Plus starts at S$1,218 ( Rs 56,939) going up all the way to S$1,558 (Rs 72,834).
In France, where the iPhone 6s has been priced higher this year, it starts at €749 or around Rs 55,000. The iPhone 6s Plus starts at €859 or around Rs 63,079, while the most expensive model costs €1079 which is around Rs 79,234.
Even in France, the most expensive iPhone 6s Plus (128) model is around $1077, while in India, the iPhone 6s (128) GB is $1421. The difference is nearly $300 between India and France.

Australia has the new iPhone models starting at A$ 1079 which is Rs 50,741, while the iPhone 6s Plus starts at A$ 1229 which is around Rs 57,796. In Australia, the new iPhone 6s starts at US $784, which is a nearly $135 hike from the base model in the US.
China, which is another very important market for the US, has the iPhone 6s starting at RMB 5288 or $832 or Rs 53,878. The iPhone 6s Plus starts RMB 6088 which is Rs 62,029 or $958. In Hong Kong, the iPhone 6s starts at HKD 5588 which is around $721 or Rs 46,653. The iPhone 6s Plus starts at HKD 6688 which is around Rs 55,837 or $862.
So why the higher pricing in India? The new devices are costlier because the Rupee has fallen in comparison to the US Dollar since the last launch. And Apple is known to build a buffer into its pricing in markets where the local currency is a bit volatile so as to avoid a price hike if things worsen. Plus, there is at least a 12 per cent just in price just from import duty.
Interestingly, a similar price hike has not been seen in China, where the Yuan has also fallen significantly.
If you look at Apple’s rivals, they are priced more reasonably, even for the premium range. iPhone 6s Plus’ closest rival S6 Edge + costs Rs 57,900 for the 32GB model, much less than the new Apple smartphones. The new Huawei Nexus 6P, Google’s new Nexus flagship, starts at Rs 41,999.
While it is hard to pinpoint the exact reason for the way the new iPhones have been priced, it is clear that with this kind of pricing, Apple maintains its premium smartphone status in India.
