Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone — Pura 70 Ultra, powered by the Kirin 9010 processor, is one of the first consumer-centric smartphones capable of sharing images using satellite communication via the Changlian app. Huawei recently unveiled the Pura 70 Ultra, (replaces the P series) for the Chinese market, and it is the second flagship smartphone from the company to be powered by an in-house processor, fabbed in China after US sanctions against Huawei.
To receive an image, the other person also needs to have the Changlian app, which is similar to WeChat with capabilities like video calling and texting. The app is currently available for select Huawei smartphones via the Huawei App Market.
While Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is not the first smartphone with satellite connectivity, it is the first smartphone capable of sending images using a satellite network. According to the company, this feature is meant for emergency usage.
Apple has been offering satellite connectivity since the iPhone 14 series in select markets; however, Apple only allows users to send text messages to emergency services and share the live location. Huawei also introduced satellite connectivity with the launch of the Mate 50 series of smartphones, with support for short text messages via the BeiDou satellite network, and upgraded the same to audio calls with the Mate 60 Pro last year.
Huawei Pura 70 Ultra users can send text messages, make emergency calls, and also share images using a satellite network. Due to the lower network bandwidth, images shared using satellite connectivity will be compressed and might look blurry.

More Android smartphones, including the next-generation Pixel series of smartphones, are likely to gain satellite connectivity in the coming days. Google is adding satellite connectivity natively on Android 15 OS, which will be available for eligible smartphones in the second half of 2024.
