Gionee has started sending out media invites for an event on August 22. The invite bearing hashtag #SelfieWithFlash hints at the launch of company’s first selfie-centric smartphone in India.

Lately, Chinese smartphone makers have been announcing selfie-centric smartphones following Oppo’s F1 series launch way back in January. Gionee is likely to introduce selfie-centric smartphones in its S series. Gionee had launched S8 smartphone at Mobile World Congress under company’s new branding in February but never introduced the device in India.

Since the launch of F1, Oppo has introduced F1 Plus and F1s as selfie-centric smartphones. Recently, Coolpad joined the selfie revolution with Mega 2.5D smartphone. While Oppo F1s was priced at Rs 17,999, Coolpad Mega 2.5D was launched at Rs 6,999.

Gionee had recently announced M6 and M6 Plus smartphones in China with dedicated encryption chips and big battery. While these smartphones were not selfie-centric, the devices came with software beautification features.

Gionee M6 was announced at 2,699 Yuan (roughly Rs 27,200) for 64GB variant and 2,899 Yuan (roughly Rs 29,200) for the 128GB variant. The Gionee M6 Plus, on the other hand, is the larger variant of M6 with a 6-inch full HD display and a huge 6,020mAh battery. Gionee S8, the smartphone first showcased at MWC in Barcelona, features a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display and is powered by a MediaTek Helio P10 processor.
