Google Pixel 3 users are complaining of serious overheating issues during charging and this is not the first time early adopters of flagship phones have reported problems. Since launch in October this year, several software and hardware issues have been pointed out by Pixel 3 series users. Of course, Google Pixel is not an isolated case as we have noticed problems with other flagships also being pointed out.

For instance, a bug made photos taken using iPhone XR and iPhone XS front camera look smoother, an issue that was fixed in iOS 12.1. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 series users claimed issues with display on the devices. So, what are these issues and have they been fixed? Here is a full list of the issues reported on the latest flagships:

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL issues

Overheating, unexpected shutdown: Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL users have taken to discussion forums such as Reddit to complain of serious overheating issues while charging even with Pixel Stand. Another issue was that of Pixel 3 shutting down without warning. The problem of overheating does not remain limited to charging, but some users have also experienced the issue with 15 to 20 minutes of WhatsApp video call and using camera for about 10 minutes. Google is yet to issue a statement or a fix.

Memory management issue: Last week, Pixel 3 early adopters complained of memory management issue that is apparently killing apps running in the background. For instance, opening the phone’s camera in between running apps such as music apps caused some devices to ‘force’ stop the background apps. Google seems to be aware of the issue and said in a statement to 9to5Google that a fix is coming soon, though it did not give a timeline. Some believe the fix will be rolled out with December security patch.

Audio, microphone and video recording issue: Google Pixel 3 users claim the front speaker on the phone “rattles and crackles” when playing audio at a higher volume. As per a Pixel 3 XL user, who took to Reddit, “the speakers sounded like they were being run through a bitcrusher”. Issues with Pixel 3’s microphone have been reported as well. Apparently, the audio recorded on the phone produce ‘displeasing metallic sound’. According to a BGR report, Google has acknowledged the issue and has rolled out a software update to fix the problem.

Image capture issue: The image capture issue reportedly occurs while HDR mode in Pixel 3’s camera where the phone fails to save captured images. Reports suggest that the file does not get saved if the user exits the native camera app before Pixel 3 completes the processing of an HDR image.

After Apple iPhone XS Max went on sale on September 21, some users complained they were facing charging issues with the device.

Skin-smoothing or Beautygate: Apple iPhone XR, iPhone XS were launched in September, soon after which skin smoothening issue on the two phones were pointed out by a YouTuber. The issue, popularly known as “Beautygate” made the front camera produce smoother-looking photos. Lewis Hilsenteger of YouTube programme Unboxing Therapy, was one of the first to highlight the issue on iPhone XS.

Apple explained in a statement to The Verge why this was happening and even rolled out a fix in iOS 12.1 which was released for iPhone, iPad and iPod recently. The problem was also pointed out by several users on Reddit and other forums with speculations suggesting Apple is using beauty filter to enhance selfies. Read our full review of Apple iPhone XS.

Charging issues: After Apple iPhone XS Max went on sale on September 21, some users complained they were facing charging issues with the device. This was also first highlighted by Hilsenteger. Specifically, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS would reportedly not reflect it was charging when users would plug their their device for charging. This was fixed with iOS 12.0.1 update.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 issues

According to some users, this was not a build issue but an illusion caused due to light reflections via the curved display.

Display leaking issue: Some Samsung Galaxy Note 9 users took to Android Central’s forum to claim that the phone has gaps in its chassis through which the display panel light is leaking. According to some users, this was not a build issue but an illusion caused due to light reflections via the curved display. Other users on the forum claimed that the problem was caused by the way the phone was painted and thus only some units faced the problem.

Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ issues

Samsung in a statement to Engadget said it was “looking into a limited number of reports of Galaxy S9/S9+ touchscreen responsiveness issues.”

Dead spots on display: Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ took to the company’s community forum as well as Reddit to complain of issues leading to unresponsiveness at certain areas or dead spots on display panels. The touchscreen or display apparently failed to register inputs in certain areas.
