Google’s latest Android Pie final version was announced in August this year. While the Android Pie stable update was rolled out to the Pixel phones on the same day, other devices like Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6, Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are among the non-Pixel phones that received the latest Android version.
But while these are either mid-range or premium models, the question remains on whether Android 9.0 update will arrive in the budget smartphones or not. In this article, we have compiled announcements around the budget smartphones from leading brands, which are expected to get Android Pie update. Here is the list.
Android 9 Pie update for Asus smartphones
Asus budget smartphone, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will get Android 9 Pie update by the end of this year. The information was announced by Dinesh, the head of the Asus Indian mobile division during an interview with YouTuber GeekyRanjit. Although he did not a specific timeframe for the Android Pie update he cited that it will be rolled out in “due course.” Asus also promised to release Android Pie update for its premium phone Asus Zenfone 5Z.
Asus Zenfone Max Pro 1 arrived in the Indian market in May this year. The device is the first from Asus’s smartphone shelf to ditch custom ZenUI skin and opt for stock version. The phone was launched with a stock version of Android Oreo onboard. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 (6GB RAM model) recently received EIS (electronic image stabilisation) support via a FOTA update.
Android 9 Pie update for Nokia phones
HMD Global back in May promised that all Android-powered Nokia phones will get Android 9 Pie update. While the mid-range Nokia 7 Plus received the latest Android OS stable version this September, HMD Global last month released the stable version of Android 9 Pie for Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus. The next budget Nokia smartphone to get the latest Android OS version is the Nokia 5.1 Plus.
HMD Global Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas responding to Nokia 5.1 Plus Android Pie update query hinted that handset should get the latest Android version by the end of this year. Nokia 5.1 Plus is an Android One powered smartphone and guarantees regular software update for two years.
Android Pie update for Moto phones
Motorola revealed its Android Pie update roadmap in August this year. The Lenovo-owned brand back then confirmed that Moto Z3, Moto Z3 play, Moto Z2 Force Edition, Moto Z2 Play, Moto X4, Moto G6 Plus, Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play will be updated to Android Pie. As per recent reports, Motorola has started rolling out the update for its mid-range Moto X4 phone in India.
The next Moto phone in line which is expected to get Android Pie update is the affordable Motorola One Power. The Android One powered Moto phone was recently spotted running Android Pie on Geekbench. While the company at Motorola One Power’s launch announced that the handset will get the latest Android OS version it did not share any specific timeframe.
Android Pie update for Realme phones
Realme, the Chinese smartphone brand took to Twitter to announce that it is bringing Android 9 Pie update to its budget smartphones Realme 1 and Realme 2. The company has not shared any word as of when the update will be available. However, Realme is expected to announce the release schedule for Android 9 Pie post the rollout for custom ColorOS 5.2. The company cited that Realme 1 will receive stable ColorOS 5.2 update on November 25. The latest custom ColorOS update is expected to bring new features such as single-swipe notification dismiss, fixes for developer options flashing, headset icon etc.
Android Pie update on Xiaomi phones
Xiaomi recently published a list detailing some of it’s high-end that will get Android 9 Pie update in Q4 this year. The list included Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, Mi 8 Screen fingerprint edition and the newly launched Mi Mix 3. However, the Chinese OEM did not share any detail regarding its plan on rolling out the latest Android OS update on its budget smartphones including the popular Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Xiaomi rolled out MIUI 10 Global Stable ROM update for the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India this October. While the update came with full-screen gestures and redesigned notification panel, the stable ROM update was based on Android Oreo OS. The Redmi Note 5’s predecessor, Redmi Note 4 has also received the custom MIUI 10 Global stable update this week. Sadly, the MIUI Global stable build for the Redmi Note 4 is still based on two-year-old Android Nougat OS.
The Android One-powered Xiaomi Mi A2 is expected to get Android Pie update by the end of this year. XDA Developers recently revealed Android Pie beta update for the phone, however, Xiaomi has not shared any word about the Android Pie beta link for Mi A2.
While the Chinese OEM is yet to not announce any timeline for the Android Pie update on its devices, Xiaomi in its forum earlier did mention that the devices that have received two major updates or have been updated recently will not get Android Pie.
Other leading brands like Samsung, Honor, Huawei are yet to make an announcement on whether they will release Android Pie update to their budget smartphones. Huawei recently shared a list of phones that will get Android Pie update starting November 10. However, the list only includes premium and mid-range Huawei, Honor phones like Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design, Honor View 10, Honor Play etc.
