Apple iPad Pro 2018: Specifications, features
Both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models feature Liquid Retina Display, a more powerful A12X Bionic Chip and Face ID. Apple has reduced the bezels on the side of the new iPad, got rid of the Home button.
The new iPad Pros are thinner at just 5.9 mm thickness. They will come in Space Grey and Silver variant. The Gold colour is not an option on the 2018 iPad Pros.
They both sport edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display with rounded corners. The resolution on the 12.9-inch variant is 2732 x 2048, while the 11-inch one has a 2388 x 1668 resolution. Apple’s new iPad Pro also comes with wide colour support, True Tone display like the iPhone X, iPhone XS and an anti-reflective coating.
The display now has support for Apple’s latest ProMotion technology. This can automatically adjust the display refresh rate, up to 120Hz. This will ensure a more fluid visual experience while scrolling, or watching motion content on the device.
Apple’s iPad Pro runs the A12X Bionic chipset, which is an advanced version of the A12 that we saw on the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. A12X is an eight-core processor, compared to the six core processor on the regular A12.
The A12X has four performance and four efficiency cores, and Apple is promising overall 90 per cent boost during multi-threaded tasks. A12X is built on the seven-nanometer design, and has a seven-core GPU for graphics. There’s 10-hour battery life on the iPad Pro 2018.
A12X’s neural engine will bring advanced machine learning to the iPad. Apple says this can perform up to 5 trillion operations per second. This neural engine is supporting Face ID, faster plane detection for augmented reality apps, and other new features that use real-time machine learning.
The new iPad Pro also comes with support for Gigabit-class LTE.
Thanks to the more powerful processor, the 2018 iPad Pro will be capable of running apps like Photoshop CC, expected to come in 2019. This is the full-fledged desktop version of Photoshop, which will work on the iPad Pro. Adobe’s Project Aero for creating augmented reality-based content will also come to the iPad in 2019 and take advantage of the A12X chipset.
The Face ID feature will work in landscape and Portrait mode on the iPad Pro 2018. It has the same TrueDepth camera with the 7MP sensor on the front. The iPad Pro now has a Portrait mode as well on the front. It supports Animoji, memoji as seen on the iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XR.
The rear camera on the iPad Pro is 12MP with 4K video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps. It is unclear though if the rear camera will support Portrait mode. The new iPads also come with more powerful four-speaker audio system.
There’s a second-generation Apple Pencil as well, which magnetically attaches to the iPad Pro and wirelessly charges at the same time. Apple has added a new touch sensor into the Pencil, which detects taps. Apple has also introduced a new Smart Keyboard Folio with a more streamlined design.
