Apple has started rolling out its iOS 12.1 update, which brings a number of new features and bug fixes to all eligible devices globally. These new features include Group FaceTime, depth control in real-time preview, and dual-SIM capability via eSIM for the iPhone XS, iPhone XR.
A few days ago the company added an updated version of its ‘iPhone user guide‘ for iOS 12.1 on its support website which explained all the new features this update adds. The list of compatible devices includes iPhone 5s and later, the iPad Mini 2 and later, as well as the most recent iPod Touch (6th gen).
To download the new iOS 12.1 update users with eligible devices can download and install the update by visiting Settings > General > Software update > Check for updates or manually by connecting their device to iTunes and performing the update.

Group FaceTime feature on iOS 12.1 now allows up to 32 people get into a conference call on FaceTime with video or voice. This new feature comes with automatic active speakers detection, which detects the most prominent speakers and then highlights them. It also includes ringless notification, messages integration, private conversations.
All FaceTime conversations remain encrypted end-to-end for privacy and can be viewed only by the participants, says Apple. This applies to the new Group call conversations as well.
The iOS 12.1 update also adds dual-SIM support to its newest generation of iPhones including iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. After updating their device users can activate an additional cellular connection from a supported telecom network provider via the eSIM facility. In India, Airtel and Reliance Jio will support eSIM on compatible iPhones.
The new update brings over 70 new emojis including new characters, animals, sports and food. These are also available on the latest macOS and watchOS update also. The new emojis include red hair, gray hair and curly hair, an emoji for bald people, more emotive smiley faces. Other animal emojis added are llama, mosquito, kangaroo and lobster. The new food emoji includes a bagel, salt, cupcake, leafy greens and mango.
Advanced depth segmentation in the device’s Portrait mode is another key addition. The new iOS 12.1 update enables more sophisticated portraits with professional-level bokeh. Users will now be able to adjust the depth of field in an image after clicking the photo, in the real-time preview.
The company has also said that Advanced depth segmentation in Portrait mode will also help ARKit apps for faster face tracking support. Apple is also rolling out MacOS 10.4.1 adding Group FaceTime and the 70 new emojis, tvOS 12.1 and watchOS 5.1.
