16-year-old passes away days after she was immolated at home

The girl had claimed six youths set her afire after a failed rape attempt

A 16-year-old who was allegedly immolated by six youths at her residence in Prem Nagar locality of Ludhiana last Thursday, died at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh early on Tuesday morning.

In her statement to the police, the girl had claimed that Shahjad, Babbu, Binder, Amarjit, Chhotu and Anwar had set her afire after a failed rape attempt. However, the Ludhiana police finds itself in a spot after the victim changed her statement. Initially, she said her mother was not present when the incident occured, but later claimed the woman was held hostage by the accused.

Sultan, the girl’s boy friend and an important link in the entire story, is still missing. Four of accused, Shahjad, Binder, Chhotu and Anwar, are in police custody, while Babbu and Amarjit are absconding.

Meanwhile, the parents of Shahjad claimed their son was giving an exam at a local college when the incident happened. The police on Monday took possession of CCTV footage from the college to verify the claim.

ACP south Rupinder Kaur said the priority is to arrest the two remaining accused named by the girl.
