When asked about the reduced number of cores in this generation compared to Intel’s first AI PC chips, Subramanian explained that Intel prioritises performance efficiency––performance per watt and performance per mm area square––over simply adding more cores. “We’ve made sure every micrometre inside the package is well utilised at lower power,” he said.

Talking about the competition from ARM-based PCs by Qualcomm, Santhosh Vishwanathan, Intel vice president and managing director, shed light on the advantage Intel has. “The x86 platform has a ‘just works’ factor; of the games we tested, all of them just work, compared to 23 per cent of the tested games that didn’t work on ARM-based Windows PCs. When you buy a PC by spending $800, $1,000, or even $2,000, you want it to work, and X86 just works in the PC world,” he said.

Intel has already shipped over 20 million AI PCs powered by the first generation Ultra Core processors, and expects 50 per cent of Windows laptops to be AI-enabled by next year. The new Intel Core Ultra 200V-powered laptops from brands like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, and Samsung are available for pre-order starting today, with sales starting September 24.

With its latest AI chips, Intel is betting big on performance, battery life, and AI, which will also gain Copilot+ AI features with a future Windows 11 software update.
