A week ago, we reported how Vancouver-based robotics firm Sanctuary AI and Tesla are readying their AI-powered robots to take over the workforce. Now, it seems another firm has officially deployed its humanoid robot in a professional environment.
Robotics start-up 1X which is backed by Sam Altman’s OpenAI has overtaken Elon Musk’s Tesla in deploying the first AI robot in the workforce. The robot named EVE has been reportedly integrated as a security guard in an Android manufacturing site. The robot is reportedly redefining surveillance and security.
EVE is backed by advanced monitoring systems such as cameras, motion detectors, and alarm sensors. And, the most insane part of the robot is that if an android misbehaves, EVE can reportedly enter its body via virtual reality and take control.
EVE is remarkably agile according to reports, the robot can open windows and doors, fetch objects and perform an assortment of tasks similar to humans.
The humanoid robotics market is estimated to reach $ 17.3 billion by 2027, and it comes hardly as a surprise that companies are chasing to develop the most advanced humanoid robots.
It has been reported that OpenAI is investing in the company to help them make a new humanoid robot with legs. The San Francisco -based AI powerhouse has the most advanced AI in the world. We all are aware of the stellar potential of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, now imagine if OpenAI brings ChatGPT into a humanoid robot.
The humanoid robotics firm 1X Technologies recently announced Series A2 fundraising led by OpenAI to produce androids at a commercial sale. It is believed that the company is planning to use the funds to enhance its efforts to build its bipedal android robot NEO and scale the manufacturing of EVE to make it available for Norway and North America.
1X which was earlier known as Halodi Robotics manufactures androids. According to its description on the official website, 1X is at the forefront of augmenting labour through the use of safe and advanced technologies in robotics. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s COO and manager of OpenAI start-up fund Brad Lightcap said that the company believes in 1X’s approach and the impact that it will have on the future of work.
The latest development comes days after Tesla announced its advanced humanoid known as Optimus or Tesla Bot. There have been numerous videos on the internet that showcase the capabilities of the robot developed by the company owned by Elon Musk. The Tesla Bot was introduced in 2022, and recently videos surfaced showing an updated Tesla Bot with more torque control and AI training from human-tracked movements.
Barely a few hours before Tesla gave an update on its robot, Canadian robotics company Sanctuary AI unveiled its humanoid Phoenix developed to join the workforce. The AI-powered robot is capable of lifting objects up to 25 kg and the company demonstrated its capabilities by deploying it as a staff at a retail store. The robot was seen performing tasks such as merchandise packing, tagging, and cleaning.
While the future of robots taking over jobs seems inevitable, one needs to note that human intervention will not be eliminated entirely. Humans will be needed to add context, train, supervise, and more use cases as AI and robotics develop over time.
