Elon Musk recently expanded the availability of Grok AI to every X user, and hours after that, xAI, the parent company of Grok, announced Aurora, its latest image-generation model, which can be accessed from within the Grok assistant on X. However, within the first few hours of launch, some users have lost access to Aurora, and the reason for this is still unknown.
Aurora is an updated version of the first image generation model that xAI introduced in October. When compared to other AI models, Aurora has fewer restrictions and can generate images with almost any prompt, including depictions of famous personalities and copyrighted characters. Each image includes a watermark in the bottom-right corner, ensuring transparency.
Responding to an X post, Musk has confirmed that “Aurora is still in beta and will improve very fast.” Despite its beta status, early user-generated content shows Aurora’s capability to create detailed, lifelike images, including controversial themes like violence and depictions of digital intellectual properties—areas where most AI image generators impose strict limits.
Aurora’s availability varies based on user tiers: free X users are limited to three image generations daily, while X Premium subscribers enjoy unlimited access. Reports from TechCrunch suggest xAI is also developing a stand-alone Grok app, potentially powered by the upcoming Grok 3, following the company’s successful $6 billion funding round.
