US Open 2016 on Day 6 saw Serena Williams advance into the last 16 with ease but Simona Halep had to dig deep for three set win over Babos. In the men’s singles, Juan Martin del Potro’s advanced on the second week at the Flushing Meadows.

Del Potro, the 2009 champ who returned to Grand Slam competition this year after missing 2 1/2 years of major tournaments because of operations on his left wrist, had little trouble beating 11th-seeded David Ferrer 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-3 to move into the fourth round. The 6-foot-6 del Potro was the clear favorite of the Louis Armstrong Stadium fans, who cheered wildly with every winner, and he responded with confident fist pumps. He ended the match with both arms raised to a standing ovation. Del Potro, who is ranked No. 142 because of his long absence from play, was given a wild card into Flushing Meadows on the heels of an Olympics performance in which he beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal before losing to Andy Murry in the gold medal match.

Eighth-seeded Dominic Thiem overcame a shaky start Saturday to secure a spot in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Thiem blasted 47 winners, 20 in the last set, on his way to a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 victory over 39th-ranked Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spaniard is now winless against top-10 players in 11 tries. Thiem, a 23-year-old Austrian, is considered one of the game’s top young players. He’s had four tour wins and a run to the French Open semifinals this year. He previously reached the fourth round at the U.S. Open in 2014. Thiem will play Del Potro.

# US Open: Serena Williams eyes next step on path to history

Serena Williams will try to take a step closer to history on Saturday when she plays her third-round match at the U.S. Open.

The world number one takes on Johanna Larsson of Sweden for a place in the last 16, the third step on the path to an Open Era record 23rd grand slam title.

Williams’ second-round win over fellow American Vania King brought her level with Martina Navratilova’s record of 306 grand slam wins.

“I knew it was on the horizon,” Williams said of the record. “I knew at Wimbledon that I wanted to get there. Obviously I’m excited about that. I would like to take one more step, several more steps.”

Williams’ troublesome right shoulder has held up well so far but she admits it is a constant battle.

“Just tons of treatment, tons of rehab, tons of ice,” she said. “It’s constant.”

Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who could yet overtake Williams as world number one this fortnight, plays Caroline Garcia of France while sixth seed Venus Williams meets Germany’s Laura Siegemund.

In men’s third-round action, Wimbledon and Olympic champion Andy Murray continues his quest for a second U.S. Open crown when he plays Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi.

Third seed Stan Wawrinka takes on unseeded Briton Dan Evans while sixth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan faces Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.
