Chelsea dented Lyon’s chances of a seventh Women’s Champions League title in eight years as the latter lost 1-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Since 2016, Lyon only once has failed to win the competition — in 2021, when the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by French rival Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG, which has never won the Champions League, lost 1-0 to Wolfsburg in Wednesday’s other quarterfinal first leg.
Delphine Cascarino hit the post for Lyon in the second half but the eight-time champions couldn’t find the equalizer at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
The Norway international’s goal was set up by Erin Cuthbert, who fought off Ellie Carpenter in midfield before delivering a pass into the area for Reiten’s one-timer.
Chelsea has never won the tournament. It lost to Barcelona 4-0 in the 2021 final.
Dusan Lajovic upsets Andy Murray in first round of Miami Open
Serbian Dusan Lajovic beat Andy Murray 6-4 7-5 at the Miami Open on Wednesday, sending the Briton packing in the first round with his first hard court win of the season.
Lajovic thrust his fists to the air after surviving a 16-shot rally on the final point, setting up a meeting with American Maxime Cressy, who won their only prior encounter.
Lajovic drew first blood, breaking the three-times Grand Slam winner to love in the seventh game and kept the momentum going in the second set.
Up a break late in the second set, however, he squandered the advantage with a double fault and a costly unforced error in the 10th game, but found his nerve to break Murray’s serve in the next game.
US viewership records smashed in World Baseball Classic final
The riveting World Baseball Classic (WBC) final that saw Japan beat the U.S. 3-2 on Tuesday in Miami drew a combined audience of 5.2 million in the U.S., a record for a WBC game, Major League Baseball said on Wednesday.
Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout in a showdown between two of the game’s best players to seal Japan’s third win in five editions of the global showcase.
U.S. viewership for the game soared by 69% from the 2017 final in Los Angeles, and three of the four most-watched games in tournament history took place during this year’s edition, MLB said.
Japanese viewership numbers for the final were not yet available, the league added.
