Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi recently mentioned about his achievement in sports at the annual meet of the PHD Chamber of Commerce, when he was asked about the importance of sports. He revealed that he holds a black belt in Japanese martial art, named Aikido. “I am a black belt in Aikido – have you heard of it? But I don’t talk about it publicly. I do one hour of sports every day, though I admit I haven’t been doing much in the past three-four months,” he had said to boxer Vijender Singh.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art which deals with different techniques like throwing, joint-locking, striking and pinning and also provides training in Japanese weapons like sword, staff and knife. In fact, this martial art is practised the most across the globe.
The art of Aikido originated by the internal and meditative disciplines from India and China. This type of art is also helpful in avoiding conflicts and wars, handling the situation with peaceful methods. Training in Aikido includes the coordination of the whole-body movement and balancing the body.
People who practice Aikido are known as Aikidoka outside Japan. Their progress entirely depends upon the grades given to them which are later followed by a series of various degrees. Some organisations also award with ‘belts’ which helps in measuring the grades of the practitioners. Most organisations use white and black belts, whereas some of them use different belt colours.
