NSFs oppose ministry’s move to trim national events’ funding
In its order dated April 7 , the ministry had announced a uniform cap of Rs 2 lakh for sub-junior, junior and senior championships.
National Sports Federations (NSF) have opposed the sports ministry’s plan to scale down funding for organising national events.
NSF representatives have raised the objection to this regard at a meeting held at SAI headquarters that was called by the sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal to review the preparedness of Indian athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
After the meeting, sports secretary Ajit Sharan said they will look into the matter.
In its order dated April 7 , the ministry had announced a uniform cap of Rs 2 lakh for sub-junior, junior and senior championships.
This was a stark difference from Rs six lakh, four lakh and 2 lakh that were earlier granted for the respective categories.
Furthermore, the ministry said the “financial assistance for holding international events in India will be considered on a case-to- case basis and shall be restricted to only one such event in the senior category of the priority sports disciplines.”
“It is difficult to get sponsors for events at the sub-junior level as athletes are not as well known as their seniors and where corporates are willing to fund. If they trim funding at sub-junior level, it will directly affect our chances of unearthing new talent,” Cycling Federation of India (CFI) secretary general Onkar Singh added.
