Rafael Nadal will miss next week’s ATP tournament in Buenos Aires following a stomach bug that has hindered his recovery from the back injury he sustained at the Australian Open. “I had a stomach virus that has not allowed me to train this morning (Thursday) and I have had to put back everything,” he said. “Without having been able to train a single day since Australia it means it has been impossible for me to prepare sufficiently to compete in an event so important.”

Bindra wins second gold

Beijing Olympics gold medalist shooter Abhinav Bindra today clinched his second gold medal of the Inter Shoot Tri series Shooting being held at Hague, Netherlands. The 31-year-old Indian had won his first medal yesterday with a qualification score was 613.7, where he was in 8th position. Bindra scored 209.3 points in the finals to win the gold. In the second match today, the four-time Olympian scored 627.7 in the qualification round. He shot 209 to win his second gold.

Rupinder fails dope test

2011 Commonwealth Championships gold medallist weightlifter Rupinder Singh has returned positive for an anabolic steroid in the test conducted in December last year. He had won a gold in the senior men’s +105kg snatch at the 2011 Commonwealth Championships in Cape Town. He also won a silver each in clean and jerk and total lift. “We have provisionally suspended him,” IWLF vice-president Sahdev Yadav. Rupinder faces upto two-year ban if his ‘B’ sample also returns positive.

Riaz Pettam claim title

The duo of Riaz Batlivala and Pettam Valy won the Mumbai leg, the fifth event of the Audi quattro Cup 2014 season and qualified for the National final to be held in Turkey. In the qualifying round held at the Willingdon Sports Club, Riaz and Pettam combined to score 41 stableford points and pipped the duo of Amit Patel and Kiran Kanwar to the second spot on a countback of the last three holes. The Mumbai South leg of the multi-city event was hosted by Audi Mumbai South in association with Turkish Airlines.
