Ministry gives in to demands, clears 17 more for Asiad

Bali has been cleared as the manager for the handball team, while Kushwaha will travel to Incheon as manager of kayaking and canoeing team.

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has finally given in to the requests from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and cleared 17 more names for the Asian Games contingent. This is in addition to the 679 they had cleared on Tuesday. The addition includes the names of IOA joint secretary SM Bali and executive committee member Balbir Singh Kushwaha, who were axed from the first list. Bali has been cleared as the manager for the handball team, while Kushwaha will travel to Incheon as manager of kayaking and canoeing team.

The notable exclusion is that of Dr Vece Paes, tennis ace Leander Paes’s father. He has been replaced by Dr Anand Kumar. Apparently, SAI director general Jiji Thomson was not aware of the addition that was made public Saturday. He was vocal about limiting the touring party for the Asiad and had rebuffed the IOA and other federation chiefs when he was approached for a rethink on the names. Hockey India was the major gainer as it got three of its four personnel back on the contingent. Jude Felix has been included as manager-cum-coach, while video analyst Amutha Prakash and physiotherapist Gaurav Mehra were reinstated to the list.

Apart from Felix, four more coaches were added. Ravi Shankar and Chandra Sekhar Laguri (both archery), Ramanand (boxing) and Ravi Prakash Tripathi (wushu). despite IOA making several presentations and its secretary general Rajeev Mehta writing to the sports minister to explain why mangers were needed in all disciplines, only six names have been cleared. “Earlier, we had deleted the names of most of the managers, except for six. The federations said if the contingent is too large the coaches will not be able to handle. And then at times there are problems in terms of representation, when managers are needed to appeal against referees’ decision. These were the main considerations why we reconsidered requests from some of the federations. But we have agreed for only one manager for some of the teams. Smaller teams can do without a manager, but in events where the number of athletes are more than 20, it gets difficult,” sports secretary Ajit M Sharan said.

Some of the injured sportsperson too have have replaced. Siam Singhal has replaced Alwyn George and O Milaan Singh has been included in place of Rowllin Borges in the men’s football team. Neha Aggarwal will replace Pooja Sahastrabuddhe in the table tennis squad. Pooja was axed for not attending the national camp. Interestingly, both Sharan and Mehta aired different versions as to why Dr Paes’s name was dropped from the new list. “AITA told us he has some prior commitments and wanted him replaced,” Sharan said. But Mehta added: “Leander isn’t participating, that’s why his father’s name is not there. Naseema Mirza’s name was also to be dropped as Sania was considering to opt out, but since she is still participating, her mother is on the list.”
