French footballer Patrice Evra will be making his mixed martial arts debut at PFL Europe Paris on 23 May at the Accor Arena, the Professional Fighters League announced. While the opponent for Evra is yet to be announced, the former Manchester United defender posted on X that when he was asked his ideal opponent by the organisers, he had named striker Luis Suarez.
Evra also joked about being open to Suarez biting him during the bout in the MMA octagon. “BREAKING: I’m officially training for my first fight with PFL Europe. They will pick my opponent… They asked who I wanna face. I said: Luis Suárez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me,” Evra posted on X.
Suarez, current playing in the Major League Soccer, has been in the dock more than once for biting his opponents in the middle of a game. He was suspended from all football-related activity for four months besides being banned for nine international matches for Uruguay after being found guilty of biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup. This incident had come on the back of another famous incident during a Premier League match where Suarez had bitten Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic while playing for Liverpool in 2013. Suarez was suspended for 10 games for the incident.
Evra reportedly started his combat training in 2016. The legendary left-back has been honing his skillset alongside friend and PFL superstar, Cédric Doumbé. Training camp for Evra’s MMA debut in the SmartCage is underway, a press release announced.
“You guys should know by now, I love this game too! I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me,” Evra was quoted as saying in the official press release. “I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years, and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on 23 May, so come watch the spectacle.”
