Wife of boxer Vijender Singh (Olympic bronze medallist and Former World No. 1)
They have been married for over a year now but considering the time Vijender Singh spends training and touring, they could well be single, says Archana. Its still like my single days. Whenever Vijender returns from a tour,he is here in Gurgaon but for the rest of the days,I am on my own. Vijender has no training on Wednesday and Saturday evenings and makes it a point to drive down to Gurgaon on those days. When he is on tour,we often talk on Skype, says 23-year-old Archana,a software engineer who is from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. The two first met at a party thrown by a common friend and got married last May after a four-year courtship.
While Vijender is out mostly on tours or training at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala,Archana lives in their Gurgaon home. When he is home,Archana ensures he eats right. Being a boxer,Vijender,26,has to maintain his weight for the middle-weight category. Since he has to watch his weight,I usually make salads or boiled vegetables for him. Now even I have got into the habit of eating healthy. But once hes back after a tour,he likes to eat paranthas and dal. When we go to his home in Bhiwani, his family teaches me how to make traditional dishes, says Archana, who worked at the British High Commission in Delhi before she got married.
Once he is out of the boxing ring and at home, the Beijing Olympics bronze medallist doesnt talk about his sport, the only exception being when he lost in the first round in the World Championship last year and came in for much criticism. He rarely talks about boxing with me. Yes,he was upset about the World Championship loss and so we went to Thailand and Dubai for a holiday to de-stress, says Archana.
In his free time,Vijender loves playing on his PlayStation. He loves gadgets and recently got himself an iPad, says Archana. Shopping is another thing Archana and Vijender bond over. He likes shopping for me. This time he asked me what I wanted from London. I said,a medal, says Archana.
