MI vs PBKS Highlights, IPL 2023: Surya and Green’s innings go in vain as Arshdeep’s final over heroics help Punjab win by 13 runs

Arshdeep Singh: Feels good whenever I take wickets. Right now I feel even happier as the team won. I have shortened my run-up as it helped me with the no-ball problem and I am enjoying my cricket at the moment. Namit Kumar: The vibes and pleasantries were bound to come to an end. Arjun Tendulkar had been the difference-maker with a brilliant yorker to break Punjab’s early partnership. His errors have made the difference for the opposition this time.

Tendulkar stuck to what he executed well against Hyderabad at the death his last outing, keeping his pace in check and pitching it outside off. Stand-in skipper Sam Curran got a read on it immediately, smashing a ball in the slot for six and then edging a four past third man. 

As the pressure piled on, Tendulkar missed both his line and length, going much fuller and paying for it against Harpreet Singh, who would hit him for three consecutive boundaries, the last of which was a no ball. The next, a slower bouncer, also went for four.

His 15th over that went for 31, was the one that turned the tide in Punjab’s favour, with Curran, Harpreet, and later Jitesh Sharma, finding the momentum to smash 65 of the next four overs to take their total to an impressive 214.

Finishes it off with a full toss and Archer goes for the whack but doesn't get enough on it for more than a single. Just the two runs off the final over. And what an over it was. 201/6 is where MI finish. Punjab win by 13 runs.

Nathan Ellis with the ball for the last time this evening. Back of a length delivery to start with, a pull shot claimed by the fielder at mid wicket. Just the two. Goes for the second ball and he knows the disaster coming straight away. A low full toss, Tim David heaves it over mid wicket for a 114m six in the top tier. JEEZ!

Bit of a chatter in the middle between Tilak Verma and Sam Curran featuring the umpire for a possible obstruction of space but Ellis was clearly slow in collecting the ball after it was deflected off the stumps at non-striker's end and the batters ran two. 15 amassed from the penultimate over. 16 needed off the last one.

Tim David joins the party. Arshdeep Singh with a juicy full toss and the Australian international dispatches it over square leg for six. 

Meanwhile, as the strike is switched, the Wankhede joins in the collective chant. 'Surya, Surya!' Not the most romantic of conclusions follow. A low full toss, flicked straight to Sam Curran at mid-wicket and even the Punjab captain can't believe it. 184/4, Mumbai. 31 required off the last 12 balls.

It was much awaited. Right from that India-Australia ODI series in which he was dismissed for three straight golden ducks. Suryakumar Yadav is back at his fifty-hitting best. Brings it with a paddle stroke for four before taking up to the skies over deep mid wicket for a maximum to wrap another healthy over. 175/3 after 17 overs. MI need 40 off the last 18 deliveries.

Pace replaces spin. Nothing changes for Cameron Green. A juicy full toss is sent back down the ground into the stands behind long on. A length delivery is slapped through extra cover for four. Ellis though, has the last laugh. Slower one, outside off is miscued and Sam Curran runs from the extra cover position to his left to claim the catch. Green departs for 67 off 43. MI are 161/3 after 16 overs. 54 needed off the last 24.

Rahul Chahar taking the long route to bowl this one. Starting from round the wicket, round the umpire, before delivering the ball from over the wicket. Suryakumar Yadav rolls his wrists, outside edge, no slip in place and it runs down third man for four. Anil Kumble on the comms goes, "He has a unique run up. Running around but going over." And over goes Cameron Green with a dancing down the track six over long on followed by a fierce hit through covers for four. 17 come off the over. 149/2 after 15.

He's just boasting it now. Sits deep in his crease and caresses a four over backward point to begin the over. Wraps it with a free-flowing maximum down long on. Pure nonchalance on offer. Mumbai are sprinting their way to the target. 132/2 after 14 and this should be quite the closing.

Nathan Ellis back on. Bangs it short and Suryakumar Yadav was ready for it. Plays that signature shot over fine leg for six. Oh, he looks in fine touch and it'd be a walk in the park for MI if he continues till the end. 118/2 after 13.

That drought of runs Suryakumar Yadav had seems to have been ages ago. Four boundaries in his first two overs on the evening. Gets down on one knee and sweeps for three fours in a row off the recent wicket-taker, Liam Livingstone. The momentum seems to have shifted back to MI. 100 up. 109/2 after 12 overs.

"Look at this. It's a nothing shot," exclaims Sunil Gavaskar on-air. "Chipping is not his style." It does seem like one. Livingstone from over the wicket and the MI captain looked to nudge the ball through the leg side. Caught by Livingstone coming around the non-striker. "Looked a bit lazy," retorts Kevin Pietersen. Brar into his second over. Overpitches to Cameron Green and gets belted through extra cover for four. Mumbai are very much in this chase, they're actually ahead of Punjab at this point in the game. The middle overs were where the visitors lost track in the first innings. If Rohit and Green can continue, the hosts look favorites even with 215 required. 66/1 after eight.

Rahul Chahar into the attack against his former franchise, at his former home IPL home ground. A brilliant over following the boundaries in the powerplay. Keeps it down to five runs. 59/1 after seven.

Impact Player Nathan Ellis is handed the ball. Pitches the first one in slot and Cameron Green hammers it down the ground for four. Almost taking Ellis' foot with the ball. This has been excellent counter attack from MI since that first wicket fell. 54/1 after six overs and field restrictions have been lifted.

Sam Curran into his first over. Starts off with a wide but keeps the run flow largely under control before a slower one, much anticipated by the MI captain, is pulled over deep mid-wicket for six. Cameron Green whacks one past extra cover for four. Another healthy over for Mumbai. 13 runs off it. 46/1 after five.

Cameron Green tries his luck against Arshdeep Singh. A wild heave off a hard length delivery, the outside edge was a whisker away from a flying Jitesh Sharma. Four. Rohit Sharma picks the length off the last ball, down on his knees and scoops the left armer over fine leg for six. 33/1 after four overs.

Harpreet Brar replaces Matthew Short. Cameron Green has joined Rohit Sharma in the middle and he picks the left arm spinner perfectly to lodge a maximum over long on. First of the innings. 20/1 after three overs.

Arshdeep Singh strikes on his first ball. Ishan Kishan caught by Matty Short. Pitched up, outside off, moves away slightly after pitching and Kishan slices it over cover point but straight to the fielder. First wicket down in the big chase.

Jason Behrendorff will close the innings for Mumbai. One ball in and it is already looking like a LONG over. Jofra Archer into his last over. Starts off well but strays off length and a wide full toss is slashed through point for four. Fifty for Sam Curran, a captain's knock indeed. Archer nails a yorker but is creamed through the same region for another four. The bowler has something to take home though as short one-on the body does the trick. Caught and bowled. Punjab, 197/6 going into the last over.

A change in the attack, as expected. Cameron Green replaces Arjun Tendulkar. Back to back sixes for Sam Curran to start off the over. A good length delivery, flat batted over deep extra cover followed by a slot ball hammered down the ground. Harpreet Singh is cleaned up on the fourth delivery off a perfect yorker but Jitesh Sharma has no chill. Starts off his innings with back-to-back sixes over long off. Another BIG over for Punjab. 25 runs off the over. 187/5 after 18 overs.

Jofra Archer hasn't been impressive so far, on he comes for his third over. A high full toss to start off and Curran guides it down short third for four. Poor start to the over. 150 up for Punjab. MI are under the pump following that heavy over. Bangs it short to Harpreet, who pulls it over fine leg for six. Ends the over with two good yorkers but sufficient damage has been donw. 162/4 after 17 overs.

Arjun Tendulkar into his third over, from over the wicket to Sam Curran. Goes full and lands it in the slot, boom! A straight maximum down the ground. A wide follows before an outside edge carries down third man for four. Two balls, 11 runs. Harpreet Bhatia gets the strike for the fourth and a similar slot delivery is offered on his platter. Smacked down the ground for four. The young pacer is under pressure. Loses his length with a full toss and Bhatia flicks it over backward square leg for six. A short one is offered next and it travels behind for another four. Finishes with a slower, back of a length delivery, placed down fine leg for another four. 31 off the over. 149/4 after 16.

Hrithik Shokeen continues from the other end and gives Sam Curran room to pull him over deep mid wicket for a six. His first of the evening and they'll need more from the most expensive player in IPL history to reach a big total. A no ball to land the extra run. 12 come off the 15th over, 118/4.

Cameron Green into his third over. Length delivery, angled in to the Punjab skipper, who smashes it down long on for four. 100 up for Punjab. Eight off the over. 104/4 after 14.

Another tight over from Hrithik Shokeen ends on a disappointing note. Just a marginal width outside off and Harpreet Singh uses his wrists to caress the ball past deep backward point for four. Much needed boundary for Punjab. First after 27 deliveries. 97/4, Punjab after 13 overs.

Namit Kumar: In limited-overs cricket in general, but particularly in the IPL this year, left-arm pacers finding seam movement have been seen as impact players. Rohit seems in agreement with this pattern, opening the innings with two left-armers, Arjun Tendulkar and Jason Behrendorff.

Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide pair had been striking well early, ending the powerplay at 58-1. Rohit kept his faith in the gameplan though, bringing Tendulkar back in the seventh over, who repaid the faith with a crucial wicket.  A perfectly-executed yorker, trapping Prabhsimran in his crease by controlling the speed well enough for him to let the ball sneak under his bat, and hit his toe. Prabhsimran would proceed to take one of the worst reviews of the IPL so far, and a solid argument is to be made that the roar at the Wankhede when the wicket was confirmed, perhaps more to do with who was bowling than who got out,, may not be beaten all day.

Shortly after, Piyush Chawla would get the all-important wicket of Liam Livingstone, trapping him with a flat short-of-length legbreak that outfoxed him as he charged down the ground, brilliantly kept and stumped by Ishan Kishan. Few balls later he would get well-set batsman Atharva out too, with a flatter length ball that he swept onto his own stumps.

Piyush Chawla with a googly down the leg side, Livingstone walks down the track and Kishan does the rest. A brilliant piece of stumping to send remove the danger man. The Leggie shifts his attention to Atharva Taide, who looks to sweep but the ball ricochets off his pads and affects the stumps. Two wickets in the over.

Liam Livingstone hasn't found his footings yet in this contest. On comes Jofra Archer with his searing pace. Ball two, short and over 143 clicks and Livingstone pulls it over backward square leg with utmost disdain. Six. 10 come off the over. 81/2 after nine.

Piyush Chawla from the other end tests Liam Livingstone by mixing his googly and stock ball. Five dots in a row before a single comes to wrap up a much needed economical over as Mumbai look to put the pressure on the danger man in. 71/2 after eight overs.

Boy oh boy, it's so good to use that phrase in the IPL. A Tendulkar has a second wicket in the league as Arjun traps Prabhsimran Singh plumb from over the wicket. A loud roar erupts around the Wankhede Stadium. All too familiar. Prabhsimran has reviewed it but as Ravi Shastri says on-air, "it is as plumb as it gets". Perfect angle and didn't he nail that yorker to bamboozle a batter looking in good touch. 

Liam Livingstone is the new man in. Another perfect yorker first up to the English batter. Ends the over with a poorly executed delivery on the pads that is helped for a boundary by Atharva Taide. 70/2, Punjab after seven overs.

Piyush Chawla introduced into attack. Prabhsimran Singh makes room outside the leg stump to inside out the leggie over extra cover for four. Atharva Taide wraps up the over with a sweep backward of square leg for four. Fifty up for Punjab. 58/1 after six overs.

Round two for Jofra Archer. His first outing for MI hadn't gone as per plan at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in their first game of the season. Virat Kohli would bash the England international left, right and centre in an eight-wicket win. Here he is, with the new ball in his first game for the franchise at their home ground. Atharva Taide picks a short one (143 clicks) and ramps it over third man for six. 10 come off the over. 46/1 after five overs.

Behrendorff continues from the other end and Prabhsimran takes him on for two biggies! 

Short and on the body, pulled over deep square leg. Twice. For the same result. Expensive over that. 16 runs off it. Punjab, 36/1 after four overs.

Matthew Short looks to pull through mid wicket but finds the fielder, who doesn't have to move an inch to collect. Punjab lose a first wicket, 18/1.

The slip has been taken off fairly early and Matthew Short's edge falls safe in the first slip region as it runs down the third man boundary for four. First of the game. 13/0, Punjab after the two overs.

Left arm pace over the wicket to the two right handers. Finds early bit of movement to get one between Prabhsimran's bat and pad. Rohit Sharma: We are going to have a bowl first. Really nice to have some wins under the belt, winning is always nice and the atmosphere is good but the job is not done. Quite surprisingly nice and pleasant. Looking forward to this game. We have had some injuries but Jofra is back and that is the only change. Wankhede is a good pitch to bat on and it gets better as the game goes on, hopefully we restrict them and chase it down later.

Sam Curran: Back to back games and not much time to think about it. No Shikhar, that's why I am here but he's recovering and should be back soon. Great opportunity for the others to put their hand and we are going with the same team. Lot of close games for us. We would have bowled as well, that is the trend but hopefully we do well.

"It is not the biggest ground going around; 65 meters one side and 59 on the other, downtown 75. The batters will be mindful of the dimensions. It looks like a very very good batting track but the fast men could be the ones to watch out for tonight. It is a great ground to bat on and it is a chasing ground. Speaking of his catch from behind the stumps, Dhoni started off with a typical tongue in cheek humor, “Still they didn’t give me best catch. I felt it was a fantastic catch. Not because of your ability but because of such a wrong position I was in to take it. Long time back I still remember one game – Rahul Dravid was keeping and he caught one like that.”

“You get old, that’s the only time you get more experienced, unless you are Sachin paaji and you start playing at 15-16. Definitely getting old, can’t shy away from that," he added. "Whatever said and done, last phase of my career, important to enjoy it. It feels good to be here. They (Chepauk crowd) have given a lot of love and affection. They always stay late to listen to me."

MI's left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff said on the eve of the game, "The team is gelling together really nicely. All the top six batters have had an impact. So that's a very exciting thing for us. Guys are getting some quality game time. The main thing for us is to keep looking to get that little bit better in each game. We have won a couple of games now and we'll just try to continue to build on that momentum." 

On his role in the bowling attack, he added, "If I bowl my fours overs upfront and would then be able to walk off, it would be nice, wouldn't it? I think it is a good opportunity to give guys games. We had the same with Rohit when he was under the weather. Those sorts of impacts are really beneficial for the game."

Punjab Kings' dependency on skipper Shikhar Dhawan is a major concern and rest of the players will have to take responsibility if they have to emerge as title contenders in the ongoing IPL, said former India spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Dhawan, however, missed their last game due to a shoulder injury, with stand-in skipper Sam Curran guiding the team to a win against Lucknow Super Giants. "The Punjab side seems is largely dependent on their captain Shikhar Dhawan in the batting department which is a concern," Harbhajan told Star Sports Cricket Live. "While depending on one player, you can win two or three matches but you cannot win a tournament like IPL. The rest of Punjab players will have to support their captain and take responsibility if they wish to go forward." Read more.

Punjab Kings all rounder Sam Curran, who became the most expensive buy in Indian Premier League (IPL) history at 18.5 crore, came under a bit of flak from Virender Sehwag who criticized the England international’s running between the wicket which led to his dismissal against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Arjun Tendulkar made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knight Riders. On the same venue - Wankhede Stadium - where his father played his last international game almost 10 years back. "The floor manager had a word with Sachin, I won't call out his name, the floor manager, he mentioned that he loved the fact that Arjun is now playing in the IPL. Sachin had tears in his eyes. And he said, you know when I bowled the first time in the IPL, my first over went for five. Arjun's first over went for five as well. Mumbai Indians couldn't have gotten off to a worse start in IPL 2023 following their first two games. Back-to-back defeats handed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings. Known as perennial slow starters, Rohit Sharma and Co have pulled their socks up since and registered three wins in a row. On Saturday, they have the opportunity to finish in the top half of the table with a fourth win as they face Punjab Kings. The latter have had a mixed start to the season with three wins and as many defeats in their first six games of the season. Top run scorer for the side and captain Shikhar Dhawan had missed the previous two games owing to injury but is expected to feature for the clash at the Wankhede Stadium.
