When MS Dhoni walloped a short ball for a six over backward square-leg and calmly allowed the slower short ball to sail over his head and checked if the square-leg umpire would call it a wide, it seemed dark clouds had descended on the Punjab dugout. Anil Kumble’s jaw clenched. Rishi Dhawan was playing his first match of the season and had an unenviable task of bowling the last over. He had the cushion of runs though after Arshdeep Singh had bowled yet another brilliant over in the final overs of an innings. Over the last couple of years, Arshdeep has been one of the best Indian bowlers in terms of the coolness of execution, and he gave away just 8 runs. Now, Dhawan produced his best yorker to keep Dhoni scoreless but served an outside-leg tripe next ball. It was in the slot too but Dhoni was a touch too early with his heave and toe-ended a dolly to deep midwicket where Jonny Bairstow pouched, smiled, and threw the ball in the air. Game over. The difference in the end was perhaps Banuka Rajpaksa's dismissal in the 18th over of the first innings that allowed Liam Livingstone to produce a fiery cameo to take Punjab to a matchwinning total.

With 69 runs needed from 28 balls, Ambati Rayudu smashed Sandeep Singh for three consecutive sixes. Two full tosses were deposited over long-on and long-leg and a short ball was slashed over backward point boundary. The camera zoomed in on to Punjab captain Mayank Agarwal, looking for a reaction. Over the last few days, they have got various reactions from captains: the over-animated Rohit Sharma, struggling to turn around the fortunes of his team, non-expressive face of Ravindra Jadeja, or the face of KL Rahul, who rarely shows much emotion except when he tries to sledge the South Africans, the smile of Faf du Plessis, Hardik Pandya’s version of cool, or the amusing boy's version of swagger from Shreyas Iyer. Rabada in to bowl the 13th and is hit for a four by Ruturaj and what do you know?? He tries to hit another big one, it goes up and lands safely in on the palms of Mayank Agarwal. CSK 89/4 after 12.3 overs.
Arshdeep Singh in to bowl the 12th as Rayudu and Gaikwad have found their groove. 2 runs off the first 2 balls. Just 3 from this over. Decent one. CSK 84/3 after 12 overs.
FOUR! Ambati Rayudu attacks Liam Livingstone and hits him for a four! And then a SIX! Another big hit from Ambati Rayudu and he is turning it on here. Floated up on the pads, Rayudu gets low and launches it high and handsome over the mid-wicket fence for a biggie. 12 runs from the over. CSK: 81/3 after 11 overs
SIX! That's gigantic! Rishi Dhawan serves another gift in an effort to bowl a slower one. It's a full toss-around leg at 125 clicks, Ambati Rayudu picks it up off his pads and smokes it over square leg. Into the top tier it goes! CSK: 64/3 after 9 overs
OUT! A little bit of movement has undone Shivam Dube. Rishi Dhawan bowls to his strength. Lands it on a good length around off, at 130 kph and gets it to nip back in slightly. Shivam Dube tries to drive but leaves a big gap between his bat and pad. It takes the inner edge and crashes onto the stumps. CSK: 40/3 after 7 overs, need 148 needed off 78 balls.
Rishi Dhawan did an Indian version of scooter's helmet when he came on to bowl. That glass-panelled mask that blacksmiths wear while soldering iron and those who drive scootys. It’s to protect himself from fierce straight hits by the batsmen. Five years back in 2017, in a T20 game in Hamilton, Otago’s Warren Barnes is said to have become the first bowler to wear a protective visor. It was a mix between baseball visor and a track cyclist's helmet, that he had himself designed with the help of his coach. Barnes felt he needed the protection as he tended to drop his head on the release of the ball and lost sight for that fraction of a second when a missile might well be launched by the batsman. Dhawan’s gear was less flashy, seemed a more a blacksmith’s version. Not sure if the helmet had any part to play but he also got a wicket of Shivam Dube, who was caught on the crease, inside edging an attempted punch on to his stumps. For all those wondering why Rishi Dhawan is wearing a faceguard! This is because Dhawan has a nose injury, he dislocated it when a ball hit him during practice and had to go through minor surgery. To protect it from any further risk of damage, he is wearing it.
TWO LEG BYES! Poor fielding from Arshdeep Singh but luckily for him Jitesh Sharma is lightning quick and save the four. Gaikwad looks to work it away but the ball comes off the thigh pad and goes towards the short fine leg. Singh lets it through but the keeper chases it down and saves a couple of runs. Dot balls create pressure and Sandeep Sharma has provided Punjab with the perfect start. The ball was short of a length, around the hips and Uthappa tried to pick it up and whip it leg side but the ball sticks a bit in the surface and Rishi Dhawan takes a simple catch. Sharma gets an early wicket and Uthappa has to depart. CSK: 12/1 after 2 overs

Unless you are Jonty Rhodes, fielding coaches rarely get the spotlight. But that rule changes if a team drops a series of catches and their fielder on the fence turns twos into fours. After Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mitch Santner failed to hold on to simple catches and a couple of diving efforts went futile, the question that was begged to be asked was: Who is CSK's fielding coach? He is Rajiv Kumar, a 5000 plus-runs domestic giant who has played for Bihar and Jharkhand. He replaced the reputed Aussie coach Steve Rixon a few years back. Rajiv was Dhoni's captain at Jharkhand and is a go-to man for any MS update for the media. At the next CSK nets, expect the old friends to organise a draining fielding session for the team.

From the 14-15h over on, Kings XI Punjab might well have thought about retiring out Bhanuka Rajapaksa. He had done his job and was only delaying the entry of Liam Livingstone. As it turned out after he hit a six in the 13.3, Rajapaksha only faced 7 balls, dealing in singles, over the next four overs before he sacrificed his wicket, going for a slog. Enter Livingstone, the modern-day Nathan Astle with his array of shots, going boom boom in a 7-ball 19 cameo. He is one of the clean hitters, who likes to go in the arc between long-off to long-on. Early on his career, by his own admission, he would obsess over the hitting style of Jos Buttler but realised that Buttler was gifted with a wonderfully malleable wrists that powered his shots, and instead strived to be his original self. “I had got too whippy with my wrists”). He started to work on having a strong base in his stance (“I used to lose quite bit of power with too wide a base”), move his back hip - which he reckons is his key - and smash through the line. He makes sure he doesn’t have too long a front stride which renders the use of his hips a touch ineffective. “At point of contact, I make sure I whip my hips through which is where all my power comes from ,” he once told Sky Sports. He whipped his hips to lift Punjab over a par score.

Ravindra Jadeja didn't have too much of the captaincy in the early part of the IPL with MS Dhoni being the conductor-in-chief on the field. But one characteristic of the former skipper has rubbed off on the new one - the poker face. CSK were using a tried and tested formula of slowing down the ball on a used pitch at the Wankhede. Spinners Mahesh Teekshana and Mitchell Santner bowled four of the six Powerplay overs and along with medium pacer Mukesh Choudhary had kept things tight. The skipper, a dangerous left-arm spinner who gives no room to batsmen to free their arms, came into the attack in the seventh. He would have had two wickets against his name if not for the butter-fingered fielders. Punjab's Banuka Rajapaksa decided to take him on but was dropped by Ruturaj Gaikwad in the deep square leg region. In Jadeja's second over, Santner let the ball spill through his hands for a six at deep midwicket. The beneficiary was Rajapaksa again. If Jadeja was losing his cool he didn't show it. No expletives, not a hint of frustration on his face. He just looked away and got back to his bowling mark. A captain with a deadpan face has been one of CSK's success mantras.

Mukesh Choudhary starts the 12th over with a very well ball. And the good will is somewhat eroded by 2 back to back wides. The next ball, Dhawan takes charge and crunched in through the covers for a four. And another. Almost identical shot but this time he placed it instead of hitting. Effortless boundary. The 5th ball is flicked to backward square leg for a boundary as well. Just too good from Dhawan. PBKS 94/1 after 12 overs.
Pretorius starts with a yorker. Great ball. The next ball is gone for a single as Dhawan brings Rajapaksa on strike. Next two balls yields just two runs. Over ends with 2 runs. PBKS 78/1 after 11 overs
Mayank Agarwal is almost Justin Langer in his responses to his dismissals. Not quite, as Langer would act as if he were robbed even when his stumps would have gone for a walk. But the disappointment and shake of head is pretty similar with Mayank. He has had a lot of head-shakes to do this IPL, repeatedly getting out cheaply and trudging off with one of the more expressive reactions of sadness in modern-day cricket. He would look to the heavens, shut his eyes, shake his head again and again, and like a true masochist, would catch the replay of his dismissal on the big screen and do it all over again. Then one more time in the dressing room after he catches the replay on the television. There is also another small clue that he isn’t batting well. That mad risky suicidal single after tapping to mid-off. He took on Mitch Santner here once, he has even taken on quicker fielders in the past, and in most of those situations he would be well short, and lucky to survive the direct hit. Soon after, comes the bad shot that would take him out. This time it was a pretty short delivery from Maheesh Thikshana and he went too hard with his cut and sent a dolly to point. It trigerred his expressive reaction as he walked back. In some ways, he is like that old Channel Nine duck emoji that would accompany the batsman, shaking and quacking under its breath. Hotstar could well do to create an Mayank emoji or even better, a Gif, for such occasions.

Pretorius in to bowl the 8th over as Punjab batters look to break free of the shackles. This has been a very uncharacteristc start by the PBKS. Finally, Dhawan breaks free and hits a nice shot for a boundary. That's 50 runs for PBKS. 8 off this over. PBKS 51/1 after 8 overs.

Chennai Super Kings opt to bowl. Ravindra Jadeja, the captain of Chennai, says that they don't know whether the dew will be a factor or not and that's why they are bowling first. Adds that they try to keep things simple and stick to plans. Mentions that they need to keep improving and he cannot put his finger on any one area where they need to improve specifically. Informs that they are going unchanged.
"This pitch has been used before, KL got a hundred batting on this wicket yesterday, but other batters struggled. It's a hard wicket, but the slower deliveries will grip a bit. The surface has good bounce and batting first would be a good choice, a total of 170-180 will be a good total here reckons Graeme Swann."
Punjab have a strong and varied bowling attack led by South African quick Kagiso Rabada, who has been right on the money. Arshdeep Singh has also been brilliant. Although the 23-year-old hasn’t snared too many wickets, he has bowled economically but Vaibhav Arora needs to step up. The role of pace-bowling all-rounder Odean Smith will be crucial. The West Indian has not been at his best so far in the IPL.
Old war horse Dwayne Bravo continues to be a reliable servant for the team, picking up wickets whenever he is entrusted with the ball. Skipper Jadeja is having an underwhelming season with bat and ball, while the addition of Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana has bolstered the severely depleted bowling unit, which is missing Deepak Chahar and Adam Milne.
Bowling has been a major concern for CSK but the former champions produced a good show against Mumbai with rookie pacer Mukesh Choudhary, who has struggled under pressure all season, wreaking havoc with the new ball, bagging three wickets.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been receiving high praise from members of the cricketing fraternity. "MS Dhoni is the greatest finisher in IPL history. Year after year, someone else has been joining this list, but no one has been able to displace MS. He is the identity of this league, a true ambassador"m said Irfan Pathan on a star.
The last time these two sides met this season, Chennai were wiped out for a meagre 126 runs while chasing Punjab's 181. Will revenge be on the cards this time?
-Punjab's pace bowlers have combined to take only 18 wickets so far in IPL 2022 - the lowest amongst the 10 teams.
-CSK's varying top-three have a collective aggregate of 436 runs so far in the season - the lowest in comparison to the other nine sides.
-Shikhar Dhawan averages nearly 42 after 27 innings against Chennai Super Kings, and needs 59 more to bring up a 1000 IPL runs against the four-time champions.

Earlier this season at Brabourne Stadium, PBKS bundled out CSK on 126, in a chase of 181, for a comfortable victory.
