India went down 2-4 to Australia in their final Champions Trophy hockey group stage match on Thursday. They needed a win to book their first final berth of the tournament but that wasn’t the case.
After their bronze in the 1982 edition, India are yet to end with a podium finish. India did miss a chance against Australia but can still qualify. It all depends on the outcome of the Great Britain-Belgium match later in the day.
Here’s a look at the calculations:
# India will qualify if Great Britain-Belgium match ends in a draw. The draw will take Great Britain to 6 points and Belgium to five points. India are second in the table with seven points.
# If Britain win, they go through
# If Belgium win, they need to win big. Not only in terms of goal difference but also in terms of the number of goals they score. So they will need a 4-2 win or better
