Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller to leave club after 25 years

The 35-year-old has scored 247 goals and won 33 trophies in his career.

Thomas Muller, who has been part of Bayern Munich’s squad for over 25 years, announced his decision on Saturday to part ways with the German club at the end of the season, in July. With his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, the midfielder saw his playing time under Vincent Kompany reduce significantly.

“Today is not like any other day for me”, said Muller, and that his “25 years as an FC Bayern Munich player will come to an end in the summer”. Muller also mentioned that the club opted not to offer him a new contract and that the situation is ‘not what he had wished’.

“This decision was extremely hard”, said Christoph Freund, Bayern Sporting Director, who also praised Muller’s instinct and reading of the game.

The term ‘raumdeuter’, which translates to ‘space interpreter’ has often been used to explain the way Muller plays. The midfielder is known for his free-flowing style of play, in which he does not stay restricted to any one position.

The veteran also has an unmatched 475 Bundesliga appearances (most for Bayern) and 161 UCL appearances (most by any German).

He also laid out his expectations for his farewell – winning the Bundesliga and Champions League in his final campaign.

As things stand, Bayern Munich have a 9-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and take on Inter Milan in the first leg of the UCL on 9th April.

Muller has made 36 appearances for the club this season, scoring 5 goals and assisting as many.
