PSG get back to form with 3-1 League Cup win against Lille

A welcome win for PSG coach Unai Emery following two home draws and an away defeat in the past three games.

Defending champion Paris Saint-Germain ended a run of poor form with a 3-1 home win against Lille to qualify for the French League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Brazilian winger Lucas scored a penalty near the end of the first half and swept home the second goal from a cross in the 57th minute. Spanish forward Jese completed the scoring in the 69th with only his second goal since joining from Real Madrid in the summer. Center back Marko Basa replied late on for Lille.

It was a welcome win for PSG coach Unai Emery following two home draws and an away defeat in the past three games.

Elsewhere, 17-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe scored a hat trick as Monaco continued its astonishing scoring form with a 7-0 home win against Rennes.

The electrifyingly fast and skillful Mbappe is the rising star of French football, and helped France win the under-19 European championship in July, scoring five goals.

Monaco, which has netted 53 goals in 17 league games and 76 in 28 matches overall, dismantled Rennes even without star forward Radamel Falcao and strike partner Valere Germain.

Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Boschilia scored twice and striker Corentin Jean netted once as they made the most of rare starts. A late own goal from Rennes defender Dimitri Cavare completed the scoring for coach Leonardo Jardim’s side.

Elsewhere, French league leader Nice went out after a 3-2 loss to Bordeaux. French striker Gaetan Laborde scored twice for Bordeaux, with veteran Czech midfielder Jaroslav Plasil getting the other, while strikers Mario Balotelli and Alassane Plea replied for Nice.

Former France winger Mathieu Valbuena scored for the fourth time in the past five games, but then missed in the shootout as Lyon lost 4-3 to Guingamp on penalty kicks, after the match finished 2-2. The final is being held at Lyon’s stadium on April 1.

Metz, meanwhile, prevailed 11-10 in an agonizing penalty shootout against Toulouse that went right down to the goalkeepers. David Oberhauser tucked his away for Metz, but Mauro Goicoechea missed for the visitors.
