Goals at either side of the half ensured Italy start their Euro 2016 campaign on a bright note against World No 2 side Belgium with a 2-0 win. Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle scored for the Azzurri to give Antonio Conte’s side a comfortable win in Lyon even as Belgium’s “Golden Generation” were left to rue missed chances.

# NUMBERS: Belgium made more passes, were more accurate, took more shots but it was Italy who had more on target and most importantly, two that found the back of the net.

FULL TIME: Italy off to a resounding start at the Euros then. They win 2-0 with a classy all-round display.

92 minutes: GOAL!! Italy wrap things up in the stoppage time. Stunning volley by Pelle from inside the box and Italy have it sealed. 2-0 Azzurri!

90 minutes: 3 minutes added on. Meanwhile Vertonghen pushes Italy boss Antonio Conte on the sidelines and is booked.

89 minutes: Origi misses the header in the centre of the box and Fellaini isn’t aware of the ball that comes his way. Another chance goes begging, Italy and Buffon can breathe easy.

87 minutes: Italy making a few mistakes and a few stray passes to allow Belgium to stay inside their half. But nothing concrete on Buffon’s goal.

84 minutes: Italy go on a quick counter and Immobile strikes but Courtois is on hand to punch it away for a corner.

83 minutes: Thiago Motta gets booked now.

82 minutes: CHANCE! Lovely cross into the box and Origi’s header is over the goal.

80 minutes: Mertens with a shot from distance and it is wide. Does get a deflection though. Corner for Belgium. But nothing comes off it.

78 minutes: Italy change: De Rossi goes off and Motta comes on

75 minutes: Belgium change: Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco comes on and off goes Ciman.

74 minutes: Cynical challenge by Eder and he is into the referee’s book. And that’s his last involvement in the game. On comes, Immobile

72 minutes: Lukaku exits amid jeers, on comes Origi

68 minutes: Mertens with a superb cross but Chiellini stays strong and firm to withstand Fellaini’s presence in the box.

66 minutes: Pelle getting treatment on the sidelines for Italy. And now Hazard is down clutching his knee. But he eventually gets up.

65 minutes: Giorgio Chiellini pulls Eden Hazard behind and is yellow carded

62 minutes: Belgium substitution: Mertens comes on, Nainggolan goes off

58 minutes: Italy substitution: Sciglio comes on, Darmian goes off

53 minutes: Pelle once again with a header and Courtois parries. Game opening up now. Interesting stuff!

52 minutes: After a great Italy chance, Belgium on the counter attack. Hazard to De Bruyne and first time to Lukaku but the Belgian chips wide! HUGE CHANCE!

46 minutes: Back underway in Lyon. Belgium kick things off in hopes of getting a turnaround.

HALF TIME: Chances at either end with Italy getting into the Belgium box first before the chasing side tried to equalise but defended well by a strong Italy lineup. Mark Clattenburg blows the whistle and Italy lead 1-0 at the break.

42 minutes: Diagonal ball by Belgium towards Fellaini in the box and he heads it in Lukaku’s path but the Belgian striker can’t take a proper shot on. Easily saved by Buffon.

38 minutes: Belgium’s Witsel takes a shot from outside the box and it is wide of Buffon’s goal. Belgium creating chances but they’re all coming from outside the box.

35 minutes: Pelle heads wide! Open header in the centre of the box and he heads wide. Belgium defence in utter mess!

32 minutes: GOAL!!! Belgium switch off in defence and Giaccherini slots it past Courtois. Lovely first touch and converts it past the Belgian goalkeeper. Credit to Bonucci for the assist.

30 minutes: Half an hour into the game, become pretty even now after Belgium’s strong start.

29 minutes: Pelle takes a shot from distance but it was never going to bother Courtois. Goes wide after a good Italy spell in the Belgium final third.

22 minutes: Nainggolan lets fly once again and this time his shot is wide. Belgium the dominant side so far.

19 minutes: Belgium offering plenty and promising much but no clear cut chance so far. Stays 0-0.

9 minutes: Nainggolan with the shot from outside the box and Buffon parries it on the bounce. Decent effort.

1st minute: Italy kick things off.

# Italy are the oldest team at Euro 2016 with captain Buffon, at 38, playing his 157th game.

# National anthems being sung.

# This guy might be disappointed if it finishes a draw. Maybe.
