With Italy failing to qualify for the World Cup next year for the first time in 60 years, Italy great Alessandro Del Piero said that he would like to see Antonio Conte return as the head coach once he leaves Premier League club Chelsea.
Conte was in charge of the four-time champions for two years, taking them to Euro 2016 quarterfinals. In an interview to Sport360, Conte said, “He did great with Juve of course and a great job with the national team.”
“We would love to have him back in Italy, of course, because he is a great coach. He would improve any team and this is what he did with Chelsea last season and what he did with Juve as well.”
“We had some problems and he fixed it, then won the title. He has some amazing qualities and that’s why he’s coaching the best teams in the world. I hope he will have a great period with Chelsea and then maybe one day come back,” added del Piero.
Conte won the Premier League in his first season at Stamford Bridge but faces speculation over his future.
Italy failed to qualify for Russia World Cup after losing to Sweden in the play-offs on Tuesday. With that came the sad end to Gianluigi Buffon’s 20 years’ career with Italy.
