Maguire, who was not part of the United squad that beat Lens 3-1 at Old Trafford, started the game but was guilty of some poor passing as Nico Williams made United pay, putting Athletic in front.

According to those inside the stadium, including Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, Maguire was booed by United supporters.

Maguire has endured a difficult pre-season, losing his captaincy, and his future at Old Trafford is also in doubt.

United head coach Erik Ten Hag spoke to MUTV after the game and said, “It was a stupid goal, we went down, but we scored [late on]. We showed character, and we need that for the season.”
