Croatia beat Brazil

The last shot of the match thudded onto the base of the left-hand post; the ball rebounded powerfully into the distance. Marquinhos slumped to the ground, shedding his tears on the much-trampled grass. Leaping and running past him, the ecstatic Croatians swarmed around their hero. Their hero in successive games, Dominik Livakovic, the unflappable, unbeatable ice-man from Zadar, whose first save off Rodrygo and the Marquinhos mishit sufficed for Croatia’s unseemly progress to the semifinals.

Few events capture joy and pain in a single frame than the last stroke of a penalty shootout. One half of the ground in mourning, the other in delirium; joy sinking in, pain ripping them apart. Both emotions, rather a stream of emotions, would take time to bed in fully. But for what it was, Brazil stumbled yet again at the quarterfinal hurdle (their third in the last four appearances); Croatia yet again tore the pile of predictions apart. (READ MORE)

Croatia’s goalkeeper sparkles in penalties again as Croatia beat Brazil to enter semi-final

Just before the penalties, the game could have been done and dusted by Brazil. Casemiro had the ball at the left corner, with just the Croatian goalkeeper Dominic Livakovic.

In the second half, Livakovic had already made at least 7 saves already, rushing out to deny time and space to Neymar, or making lunging stops. But this one felt different. The final moment in the extra-time, just a whistle away from the shootouts, but suddenly Casemiro’s foot swings towards him from a close range. It wasn’t a powerful kick but it didn’t much venom from that distance.

The ball swerved to his left, but Livakovic fends it away. Whistle blows. Shootouts begin. On the day before the quarterfinal against Brazil, Livakovic would tell HRT Sport about how he prepares for his penalties. He had already saved Crotia in the game against Japan. (READ MORE)

Messi’s World Cup dream lives on

Argentina and Netherlands began their World Cup quarterfinal on December 9 at the Lusail Stadium in Doha. By the time the brawl was settled and the players walked off the pitch, it was December 10.

In the intervening moments of this World Cup classic, there were 17 yellow cards, a Messi assist for the ages, a creative Dutch free-kick in the 100th minute to force extra time, which wasn’t enough to separate the two royalties of international football.

Ultimately, after the scores were level at 2-2 following extra time, Argentina prevailed in the penalty shootout 4-3. And Messi’s dream to win the World Cup lived on. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez ensured that with spectacular saves in a tense tie-breaker. (READ MORE)

Louis van Gaal announces retirement

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has announced his retirement following a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the quarter-final.

“First and foremost I won’t be continuing. I only did it for this period of time. This was my very last match of my third term as head coach,” Van Gaal said in his post-match press conference.

“In that time I coached 20 matches and we didn’t lose a single one. I don’t know how many matches we won, but you can Google ‘Louis van Gaal, Dutch team’ and see the goal difference for yourself. (READ MORE)

Two of a kind: How Virat Kohli is so Ronaldo and Ronaldo is so Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has often said how he and his ultimate sporting hero Cristiano Ronaldo have a lot in common. By his own admission, both aren’t naturally-gifted, say like a Messi, but it’s only through hard work that they have stayed at the top of their sport. Kohli has also mentioned how Ronaldo gets “targeted on a daily basis but has the mental strength, the will to work hard and the desire to keep coming back”.

Of late, more similarities have sprouted. A year back, it was at Abu Dhabi, an angst-ridden Kohli was replaced by his long-time team mate Rohit Sharma as India’s skipper at the T20 World Cup. This week, along the same Arabian Peninsula in Qatar, Ronaldo had reluctantly handed over the captain’s armband to his old pal Pepe. It wasn’t a coincidence that the men, who made wearing the heart on the sleeve fashionable, had looked sullen after the snub. It is never pleasant to watch the usually energetic and enthusiastic wear a glum look, silently nursing their amputated spirit. (READ MORE)

Morocco represent all Arabs at the World Cup - Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny

After representing his country on the world stage at Russia 2018, Egypt’s Mohamed Elneny narrowly missed out on the opportunity to do so again at Qatar 2022. Had Egypt made it, the feeling would likely be even more special since it was the first World Cup to be held in an Arab country. Nevertheless, while continuing training and off-season games with his club Arsenal, Elneny has been supporting the Arab teams while watching from home. And he has seen fellow North African side Morocco’s remarkable World Cup run with glee. “It’s been a brilliant World Cup with lots of surprises,” he told the National News. “Arab teams have done a great job and they’ve really entertained us.” (ALSO READ)

Lionel Messi takes aim at Weghorst, Van Gaal, and referee

Following Argentina’s fiery penalty shootout win over Netherlands in the quarterfinal of the World Cup, tempers flared between the players and coaching staff of the two teams. While Lionel Messi, man of the match on the day with a goal and an assist, was doing an interview with TyC Sports after the game, he had a run-in with Wout Weghorst, scorer of both Dutch goals to get them back into the game. “What are you looking at, fool? Go away,” Messi was quoted as saying by the television channel. The Argentine skipper added that he did not feel ‘respected’ by the opposition on the day, not even by their coach Louis van Gaal, then took a dig at the Dutch manager’s philosophy. (READ MORE)

Watch Martinez hurls abuse towards Louis van Gaal

Emiliano Martinez fell to the ground after Lautaro Martinez converted the winning penalty before getting to his feet and running toward the Dutch bench to insult his opponents. The Argentina hero was caught on camera yelling abuse at a Dutch manager after his side’s penalty shootout victory in the quarter-final. “Keep your mouth shut you f***ing t***! I f***ed you twice,” said Martinez. (WATCH)

Wout Weghorst

It was almost a Wout Weghorst story. A story that probably would’ve cast him as a villain by Lionel Messi fans as he almost Argentina a World Cup victory after his brace took the quarterfinal clash with the Netherlands to extra time and penalties. The Burnley striker, currently on loan at Besiktas, was introduced after 78 minutes of the quarter-final clash but made his mark in dramatic fashion: First, he placed a well-taken header beyond Emiliano Martinez to pull the Dutch back into the match at 2-1. Then he fired home from close range following a well-taken free-kick from Teun Koopmeiners. As it was in the semifinal, Weghorst’s story is all about determination. (READ MORE)

Kylian Mbappe must destroy World Cup records

11 matches, nine goals. At the World Cup. No other player had scored eight goals let alone nine before turning 24 at the 22 World Cup finals. And one won’t be wrong in predicting that for a long time, no one will. No one but Kylian Mbappe, who now have to score only seven goals to equal Miroslav Klose’s all-time competition record, but has age on his side. At 23, he will be playing his next World Cup under the age of 30, and the one after that at 31. Mbappe’s brace against Poland in the Round of 16 elevated his goal scoring tally to five in four games at Qatar 2022, already one better than his overall tally at Russia 2018. Quite the feat for anyone playing at their first two World Cups. His age makes it look even more so ridiculous. (READ MORE)

England vs France Preview

Much of the build-up to the blockbuster quarterfinal encounter between England and France – two teams brimming with individual talent – has been focused on one man: Kylian Mbappe. The prolific Paris Saint-Germain forward is in mercurial form as the tournament’s highest goalscorer with five goals. He has looked sharp on and off the ball, and his match-winning brace against Poland in the round of 16 would have the English defence worried. (READ MORE)
