Atletico Madrid says it has reached a deal with Benfica to sign Argentina midfielder Nicolas Gaitan.
Atletico says the 28-old-old player is with Argentina at the Copa America and will travel from the United States to Spain after the tournament to finalize his transfer.
Gaitan played two seasons with Argentine club Boca Juniors before signing with Benfica in 2010. He played 252 matches with the Portuguese club, scoring 41 goals.
Gaitan has 15 made appearances with Argentina’s national team, scoring two goals.
Atletico, led by Argentine coach Diego Simeone, was third in the Spanish league and reached the Champions League final, losing to Real Madrid for the second time in three seasons.
