What are the things Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to tweak technically? Irfan Pathan analyses: ‘He needs to synchronize these three…’

"He is an all-format player and I had said before the series that he can hit 200 if set," said former Indian all-rounder

On Saturday, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his maiden ODI century against South Africa, helping India to win the series 2-1. With the ton, Jaiswal has now scored centuries in all formats. While former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan acknowledges that Jaiswal is a capable all-format player, he needs to tweak his technique a bit says former all-rounder.

“It was important to come runs off Yashasvi Jaiswal’s bat. He is an all-format player and I had said before the series that he can hit 200 if set. The way he batted after his half-century showed he can make big scores. But he struggled initially, stepped out, got beaten and tried to cut numerous times. He has Test hundreds, a T20I ton and now he has a century in all three formats. It shows his potential. Despite the struggle, he didn’t play any rash shot to throw away his wicket. Jaiswal opted to stay at the crease despite the struggle,” Pathan said on his YouTube channel.

“It was sensational to see the young man scoring runs. But I would like to analyse his technique a bit deeper. His hip goes towards short fine leg and his shoulder’s upper body opens up and he tries to go side on. He needs to synchronize these three things. He struggles with these initially, especially against left-arm bowlers. When Jaiswal gets time, he should work on these.”

Jaiswal was awarded the Player Of The Match for his performance, and speaking to the broadcasters, he revealed that talking to Rohit Sharma has helped him. “We have been chatting a lot about how we can play and how we can set the target and what tempo we can play. So, I’m trying to understand. I had starts in last two games but I couldn’t convert. So, we have been speaking how we can convert this and how we balance this inning. I was just thinking how I can balance the inning. So, sometimes I need to be attacking and sometimes I was thinking, okay, maybe I’ll take a single or I’ll run the game. So, that was my plan and it was pretty good.”
