West Indies vs South Africa Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: Jansen’s six powers SA to semifinal, WI knocked out

Credit to the boys for fighting till the end. As a batting group, this is a performance we want to forget, we didn't bat well in the middle overs. We lost wickets in clusters and that always breaks the back of the batting team. It was a commendable effort, the boys believed they could defend 135. We haven't won the World Cup or reached the semifinal but we have played some good cricket in the last 12 months. There is a buzz among the supporters about West Indies cricket again and that is something we take away. We really appreciate the support we have got at various venues and the likes on social media.

Shamsi: I am sweating, I wasn't even there (in the middle), but I was nervous, but that's been the trait of the team in this tournament, always fighting till the end. We looked at Marco Jansen's reaction, he seemed confident that it had crossed the ropes. Our supporters and staff would probably like bigger wins, but we need to take these performances going ahead. We've had a lot of chatter, I was backed by the coaching staff to work on my plans. The guys set things really well, we're firing on all cylinders and looking forward to the next match. We've played well as a team, a complete team performance, there's no pressure on anyone, we're working well as a team. It's a love affair between South Africa and the World Cups (On rain stopping play), but the boys were calm, we knew what we needed to do and there were no such crazy thoughts going around.

South Africa were quite close to bottling this chase, as has been a norm with them over the years in knockout games. But the target proved to be just within their limits this time and Marco Jansen seemed ice-cool since he walked out to bat in a nervy chase. South Africa have topped their group, continuing their unbeaten run and are likely to meet the second-placed team in Group 1 in semifinal.

Chase starts with a dot to Maharaj, cramping him around off-stump. Chase to Maharaj, OUT! IN THE AIR AND STRAIGHT TO LONG-OFF. Is the 'C' word back to hurt South Africa? Kagiso Rabada is in at 9. He finds a single first ball. Chases tosses one up and Jansen pumps it to deep mid-wicket for a single. 11 needed off 8. Chase skids one through to beat Rabada and Pooran and SA reel in 2 byes! Full outside off-stump and Rabada creams the ball through extra cover for FOUR! SA need 5 to win!

Joseph slides the ball in and Jansen flicks it through mid-wicket for two runs. He finds a single. Joseph pins Maharaj for a couple of balls before a single. This is going down to the wire, folks! Short outside the off-stump and Jansen punches it through cover. Russell fumbles in the deep and hands an extra run!

Chase to Stubbs, OUT! Straight to long-on. Was there the need for that slog now? Stubbs fails to clear the man in the deep and South Africa find themselves in big trouble now. Keshav Maharaj is in at 8. He opens his account with a single.

Russell to bowl out. 

Russell bumps one to Jansen's hips and he brushes it fine for FOUR. A single to follow. Russell overpitches but Stubbs drives it straight to the cover fielder. Six from the over. SA need 23 to win.

Roston Chase into the attack

Stubbs tucks the first ball down leg for a single. Miller continues to hold one end tight. Chase to Miller, OUT! Bowled him! Miller attempts an expansive cut and Chase slides it through to the off-stump. Massive wicket for West Indies. Marco Jansen is in at 7. He is off the mark with a single.

Russell returns

He pushes a fuller delivery past Miller and it keeps low as it passes the bat. Russell comes around the stumps and skids one through to the keeper. He tails one in sharply this time and Miller digs it out from the stumps. Sharp bumper and the umpire signals a wide.

Joseph continues to attack the stumps hard, forcing the batters to employ a firm defence. A string of dots and only three singles from the over.

Obed McCoy is into the attack

He is struggling with his lines at the moment, bowling three wides. McCoy cuts down on pace and attacks the stumps. Width outside the off-stump and Stubbs leans into a crisp square-cut for FOUR.

Thick outside-edge and the ball flies past Pooran for another FOUR! Joseph induces the sharp edge from Stubbs but West Indies are short on fortune at the moment. Joseph continues to attack the stumps as the batters resort to singles, now that the pressure has eased on them. Joseph to Klaasen, OUT! A RIPPER FROM POORAN! Sharp, steep bouncer from Joseph completely has Klaasen off-guard. The ball lobs up off the top-edge and Pooran leaps backwards to complete a stunning catch.

Gudakesh Motie replaces Hosein

Tossed-up into the slot and Klaasen pumps it down the ground for a huge SIX. He drags another ball to wide long-on for one run. IN THE AIR and Klaasen cuts the ball just past a flying backward point for FOUR. Motie slides one in and Klaasen nudges it fine for another FOUR. This is a sharp counter-attack from South Africa. Fraction short on the off-stump and Klaasen gets a thick outside-edge racing down to third for FOUR more! 20 from the over.

Alzarri Joseph into the attack

He tucks one into the pads and Stubbs flicks it behind square for one run. Joseph to Markram, OUT! Straight to mid-off. Markram aims to lift the ball from length but the extra bounce proves to be his undoing. Heinrich Klaasen is in at 5. He is off the blocks with a single. Steep bouncer and Joseph concedes FOUR wides. He is not happy with Pooran's effort there in attempting to stop the boundary.

Hosein continues. Markram charges down for a push to mid-on and finds a single. Loosener on length and Stubbs smacks it through cover for another FOUR. Length again from Hosein and Stubbs smashes the ball through cover for FOUR. He flicks one behind square and finds a single.

Andre Russell returns

He starts with a short ball angled in towards Markram who clips it to the on-side for a quick single. Russell pins one in sharp and Stubbs nearly chops it back to the stump. Every dot ball receives a loud cheer from the Antiguan crowd. Short and wide and Markram smears the ball through cover for FOUR.

Aiden Markram returns to the crease with new batter Tristan Stubbs. Akeal Hosein to continue with the ball.

Turn and bounce straightaway for Hosein as he whiffs the ball past Markram's bat to the keeper. Markram nudges one towards backward point and reels in a single. Hosein tosses one up outside the off-stump and Stubbs pushes it past cover for a single. Hosein slides one in and Markram unfurls a reverse-sweep past short-third for FOUR.

A patch in the outfield is still concerning the officials. Groundstaff continue to put in the work and we might be set to lose an over or two in the chase.

The super soppers are working over certain wet patches in the outfield. There is about 10 minutes left before we start losing overs.

The latest the match can restart is at 12:38 am local time (10:08 am IST). The target for a five-over match will be 48 for South Africa.

The rain has relented at the ground and the covers come off. There are a few puddles in the outfield and the groundstaff will soon back into action. We will start losing overs in about 25 minutes from now.

A washout will be enough for the South Africans. It's raining pretty heavily as the groundstaff scramble to cover the entire square. If five overs of play would not be possible, South Africa will join England in the semi-final as the second team from Group 2.

Uh, oh! It's pelting now in Antigua. The covers have come on as the players leave the field.

A successful over for Andre Russell. Another one bites the dust! Russell with two crucial wickets in an over. de Kock departs for 12 runs. Both the South African openers are back in the hut and Dre Russ is absolutely pumped up. (SA: 15 for 2 after 2 overs)

Quinton de Kock is looking in burry. Excellent shot over the cover and he collects his second boundary. South Africa need 128 runs in 117 balls.

Some intense huddle speech by Rovman Powell. The umpires and players walk into the middle. South Africa openers Quintin de Kock and Reeza Hendricks are out in the middle. For West Indies, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein will start the proceedings. South Africa need 136 runs to win in 120 balls. 

“Really nice to be out there on the park when there is a full crowd in. We wanted to play against the home team and happy with our performance.

Markram was fantastic. That’s the brilliant thing about our team. Everyone steps in. Markram marshalled his troops brilliantly and bowled beautifully with the new ball.

It’s a decent surface to be honest. There is turn but nothing excessive. Good cricket shots and our boys in the shed know what to do.

I haven’t heard anything about him (Jansen) yet. But, hopefully we won’t require him with the bat.

West Indies are a power-packed unit. We knew they would come out hard against us. But very pleased with the total. But it’s cricket and we have to bat well to chase it down."

Kagiso Rabada removes Akeal Hosein. Rabada has been introduced into the 18th over, and he responds with a wicket in his opening over.  West Indies are 8 down now. (SA: 117/8 after 18 overs)

A direct hit from Nortje at the striker's end and Russell might be struggling here. The decision is sent upstairs. The replays are in and Russell is just short of the crease. He is kicking himself as he heads back to the pavilion! West Indies are in deep trouble again. (WI: 117/7 after 17.1 overs)

That is the power of the man - Andre Russell! He was waiting for the pace and here comes Nortje and he slammed him for back-to-back sixes.  (WI: 115/6 after 16/2 overs)

Akeal Hosein hits the much-needed boundary for West Indies and it brings up the 100 for West Indies. Shamsi also ended his excellent spell. (WI: 103/6 after 16 overs)

Just three singles came from Maharaj's last over. He would finish his quota of overs with the figures of 4-0-24-1.  (WI: 97/5 after 14 overs)

Shamsi picks up his second. Markram with a good low catch at the first slip. He claims the catch and starts celebrating straightaway. Rutherford departs without troubling the scorers. (WI: 94/5 after 13.5 overs)

50 up for Roston Chase. Excellent innings to revive the side from a deep trouble. Gets there in 39 balls. 1st T20I half-century in the T20 World Cup

100th dismissal for Quinton de Kock in T20Is. He has taken 82 catches and completed 18 stumpings.

That's a beauty from Maharaj. Powell loses his balance and de Kock behind the stumps is very quick to whip the bails. Rovman Powell departs.  (WI: 89/4 after 12.4 overs)

Shamsi gets the wicket of Kyle Mayers. Shamsi breaks the partnership. End of a scratchy night with the bat for Kyle Mayers on his return. He replaced Johnson Charles in the XI, who has been struggling in the tournament, but Mayers failed to convert his start.  (SA: 86/3 after 12 overs)

Roston Chase hits Shamis for a six. They are breaking the shackles.

Nortje is bowling some rockets here in Antigua. Excellent bowling from the South African pacer. He gave away just four runs from his second over and it has been 20 balls since West Indies have scored a boundary and they have already faced 50 dot balls so far. (WI: 73/2 after 11 overs)

Just the three singles from Shamsi's first over. At the halfway mark, West Indies are 69 for 3.

Massive collision. Both Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen are down and it has gone for a six. This doesn't look good. Both are down and looking in pain. The physio runs out to the middle quickly to check the pacers. (WI: 63/2 after 7.5 overs)

Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase have put on a 50-run stand for the third wicket. 

Seven runs from the over, South Africa has been really sloppy in the field. (WI: 54/2 after 7 overs)

An inside edge saved Mayers and then he tonked Markram for a big six. That will be the end of the powerplay. South Africa could have got a couple of more wickets, had they not dropped easy catches. (WI: 47/2 after 6 overs)

Another chance that goes down. This time it is Keshav Maharaj and the batter is again Roston Chase. Maharaj is slow to react as he gets both hands to it but drops it. That really should have been taken.
