On Thursday, the Uganda cricket team created history by qualifying for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The side has beaten Rwanda by nine wickets chasing 66 runs from 20 overs. Brian Masaba’s led side chased the total in 8.1 overs to become the second team to qualify after Namibia.

The African nation will be only the fifth team to qualify for the showpiece event from the continent. Uganda has won five of the six games and finished in the second position of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa region qualifier.

In their journey to make it into the World Cup as the 20th side Uganda has defeated Zimbabwe. The latter has been appearing consistently in this tournament in the past.

In fact, Zimbabwe has defeated a Test-playing nation like Pakistan in the last T20 World Cup in Australia. The win against Zimbabwe was Uganda’s first-ever win against a full-member side.

Zimbabwe are currently placed third in the regional final with six points, having won three of their five games. After the results of the Africa Qualifier, the slots for the 20 participating teams have been filled. The main tournament is set to take place between June 4-30 next year.

The top two sides from each group make it to the Super 8 stage, followed by the semi-finals and the final.

The qualified teams for the 2024 T20 World Cup:

USA, West Indies, Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Nepal, Oman, Namibia and Uganda.
