A fit-again Shakib Al Hasan returned from injury and has been included in the 13-man Bangladesh squad for the first Test against the West Indies Bangladesh on Saturday. The 31-year-old all-rounder had to undergo surgery on his left little finger in September after it aggravated in the 2018 Asia Cup. Soumya Sarkar and 17-year-old offspinner Nayeem Hasan were the other inclusions in the Bangladesh Test squad. Liton Das, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Abu Jayed, Shafiul Islam and Nazmul Islam were all dropped.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, selector Habibul Bashar said, “It was great to see the return of Shakib as we believe his presence will bolster the morale of the team to a great extent.”
“We did not pick Abu Jayed and Shafiul Islam due to strategic reasons. We have got two pace bowlers in the team while we believe our spin will be more effective against the West Indian than our pace attack. Liton is not amongst the runs so we decided to have a look at Soumya who is doing extremely well in the recent past,” he added.
Speaking on the inclusion of Tamim Iqbal, chief selector Minhajul Abedin said, “Tamim Iqbal has no physical problems currently, but he is short of match fitness. But since he is a senior player, we think that he is ready,” Minhajul said.
“Soumya has done well in the NCL. Our openers have failed in Tests, so we want to give him a chance. Soumya plays fast bowling quite well,” ESPNCricinfo quoted him saying.
