The Himachal Pradesh lower-order showed its might with the Bipul Sharma-led side gaining a sizable first-innings lead to be in command against Services on Day 3 of the Group C Ranji Trophy match.

Starting on their overnight score of 255 for six in the four-day encounter, Himachal rode a brilliant 99 from No.8 batsman Nikhil Gangta to post 479 and gain a 253-run lead.

Overnight batsman Rashmi Parida (58) was out early but Gangta carried on from where he left and stitched a ninth-wicket 77-run partnership with Karanveer Singh (27).

Then he found a partner in No.10 Vikramjeet Malik (59) to manage another 75-run 10th-wicket stand to further frustrate the Services bowlers.

Even the last man, Pankaj Jaiswal, contributed an unbeaten 41 as Gangta was unlucky to be run out and miss his second first-class century by just one run.

Left-arm spinner Abhishek Sakuja bagged 4 wickets as pace spearhead Suraj Yadav picked up 3.

At stumps, the Yashpal Singh-led Services had managed 91 for three with a trail of 162 runs.

Brief Scores: Services 226 and 91/3 in 38 overs (Pratik Desai 22, Sumit Chatterjee 27; Rishi Dhawan 1 27). Himachal Pradesh 479 (Nikhil Gangta 99, Vikramjeet Malik 59; Abhishek Sakuja 4-91).

Andhra follow-on despite Prasanth ton

Despite a patient century from opener Prasanth Kumar, Andhra Pradesh failed to avoid the follow-on as Hyderabad bowlers made sure that their batsmen’s effort does not go wasted on Day 3 of the Group C Ranji Trophy match.

Responding to Hyderabad’s 522 in the four-day encounter, the Mohammad Kaif-led Andhra slumped from their overnight score of 121 for no loss to 369 all out and fell short by just 3 runs to avert a follow-on situation.

Prasanth (124) was the stand-out performer for the Andhra in his 257-ball stay, striking 17 fours and a six.

Hyderabad’s pace spearhead Ravi Kiran and off-spinner Syed Quadri bagged 3 wickets each and were ably supported by left-arm pacer Chama Milind, who picked up 2 wickets.

Following-on, Andhra were 24 for no loss at stumps with Srikar Bharat and Prasanth fighting on.

Brief Scores: Hyderabad 522 all out (D Ravi Teja 96, Ashish Reddy 95, Chama Milind 97 not out; Duvvarapu Shivkumar 4-84) Andhra Pradesh 369 and 24/0 fo in 6 overs (Srikar Bharat 10 not out, Prasanth Kumar 11 not out; Ravi Kiran 0-8).

Kerala keep chances of taking first innings lead alive

A fine century by Amit Verma propelled Kerala to 299 for six in their first innings on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Group C match against Goa.

Kerala did well to end the day one run short of 300, needing just another 69 runs to topple Goa’s first innings total of 367 all out. But the hosts have just four wickets remaining.

Brief scores: Goa 1st innings: 367 all out Kerala 1st innings: 299 for six in 125 overs (Amit Verma 129, Nikhilesh Surendran 54 not out).

Assam beat Tripura by 10 wickets

Medium pacer Krishna Das snared a seven wicket-haul to aid Assam in their 10-wicket win over Tripura in a Ranji Trophy Group C match at the Nehru Stadium.

Tripura’s batting came a cropper for the second time in a row, folding up for 135 and 155 in each innings after Assam
made 275. The hosts needed just 16 runs to win in the second innings and it took them just 3.3 overs to reach home on day three of the game.

Krishna ripped through the batting order, taking his match tally to ten wickets. For Tripura, the contributions from Rajesh Banik (39) and Rakesh Solanki (40) were not enough to save their team.

Brief scores: Tripura 135 and 155 (Rakesh Solanki 40, Rajesh Banik 39; Krishna Das 7/50) Assam 275 and 1/0.
