POLICE CONSTITUTED an inquiry after alleged celebratory firing was reported at the wedding procession of Ravindra Jadeja on the outskirts of Rajkot on Sunday.
Rajkot Rural police said the incident took place inside a hotel on the western outskirts of the city where marriage rituals of the cricketer are going on for the last two days. In videos that went viral on social media sites, a man is seen firing from his revolver as the groom Jadeja mounts on horseback for the wedding procession on Sunday morning. However, police said it was unclear as to how many shots were fired in the air in celebration.
“We have received reports of celebratory firing at the wedding procession and we have asked Lodhikha police to conduct an inquiry and file a report. It was a private function and police were in the area merely to regulate traffic,” Rajkot Rural SP Antarip Sood said.
A native of Jamnagar, Jadeja is a regular player in the senior cricket team of India and also plays for Saurashtra in domestic tournaments. He is getting married to Riva Solanki, an engineer who is native of Junagadh district.
The hotel is located on Kalavad Road and police said it had its own private security arrangements. “Nobody is allowed inside the hotel and the hotel has its private security. The firing took place during wedding procession in the morning inside the hotel. We have not received any complaints so far. But we are conducting an inquiry and based on that, we shall lodge an FIR if warranted,” Lodhika police sub-inspector Mahendrasinh Rana said.
After the marriage ceremony on Sunday afternoon, Jadeja is to host a grand reception in the same hotel in the evening.
