R Ashwin set another record when he became the fastest Indian to pick 200 Test wickets. His third scalp against New Zealand in the second innings was his 200th in the longest format. Celebrations triggered for Ashwin when he trapped New Zealand Kane Williamson in front.
The ball spun back sharply and hit the Kiwi skipper in line of the stumps. Ashwin had also dismissed Williamson in the first innings of the match, with a peach of a delivery.
What makes Ashwin’s feat all the more special is that he over took Dennis Lillee, Waqar Younis, Dale Steyn as all of these legendary bowlers took more matches than Ashwin to reach the 200th Test wicket milestone.
Ashwin is only behind Australia’s Clarrie Grimmett who took one Test fewer than India’s premier off-spinner. Ashwin is now just nine wickets behind Ishant Sharma, who is also part of India’s Test squad for the series but was ruled out for the opener due to chikungunya.
When the umpire raised the finger to signal the end of the innings for Williamson, celebrations started for Ashwin and Twitter was set on fire. The whos and whos of Indian cricket tweeted lauding the effort of Ashwin.
