PBKS vs RR Highlights, IPL 2024: Hetmyer leads Rajasthan to last-over win as Punjab hand mighty scare

Sanju Samson: (High-catches) We had fee funny instances from last year and this year. But I am really happy that everyone is eager to go and catch it. The stadium is full of noise and we can't look who is coming. I need to tell my fast bowlers that it's easier to catch with the gloves. We all were (tensed during the run-chase). Against Punjab in the last 3-4 years, each and every game is very close. They bowled really well, it was a funny game. (On Hetmyer) He has been doing ti for years and years, experience and composure. Rovman and Hetty - having them was good. Tanush had a fabulous Ranji Trophy. He's been impressing everyone. We didn't want to unsettle the batting order. Very happy to see him (Jaiswal) get those 30s and 40s.

It’s important for us to get two points, the guys are keeping up, credit to the guys. (On stand with Hetmyer) The good thing is we both are calm, we talked that we should run fast, we are West Indians, we are boundary-hitters. It’s a challenge but we are professional cricketers. (About Buttler’s niggle) I think they are doing some very good work with him, I think he would be out for another day or two but it’s good that we have a game in 3-4 days, so he will likely be back by then. I am a good player, if I not getting games then it means the team is doing well. Whenever I get my opportunity, I will give my best.

Curran: The wicket was slightly slow, but we didn't start well with the bat and didn't finish well in the end. It was a good effort from the lower order, getting to 150 was excellent, the bowling was good, we kept them down, unfortunately another close loss. We stuck to our plans, bowled and fielded well, but I'm confident we'll bounce back in the next game. Three games is a hard way to fully work out the conditions (at Mullanpur), but we've adapted well, we won the first match and lost two matches by close margins (by 2 runs and 3 wickets), hard to take, but the boys will be lifted by how well we've played in the last couple of games.

Kagiso Rabada has been Punjab Kings' best bowler this season and there is a reason for that. They have used him flexibly instead of trying to be rigid with the overs he bowls. Bowling in death hasn't always been his strong suit and Punjab haven't hesitated to bowl him out earlier. On Saturday against Rajasthan Royals too, Sam Curran – stand-in skipper – brought Rabada back into the attack  in the 12th over when Yashasvi Jaiswal was looking like he could play a match-defining innings. The pacer dug one in short for an effort ball, got Jaiswal off balance playing the upper cut. One big breakthrough achieve, Curran kept him going in the 14th over. And the South African superstar duly got the wicket of Sanju Samson with a delivery that kept lower because he cut it across with his fingers. Mission accomplished. - Vinayakk Mohanarangan

Arshdeep beats Parag with a quicker delivery that thuds into the keeper's gloves. Length from Arshdeep and Parag top-edges it this time for SIX! Fuller ball and Parag gets an inside-edge that trickles down fine leg for two runs. Arshdeep to Parag, OUT! High into the sky and Parag fails to clear mid-wicket. Short ball and Parag toes the pull to Rabada in the deep and there's pressure back on RR! Shimron Hetmyer is in at 6. He's off the blocks straightaway with a single. Arshdeep squares up Jurel with a beauty and the umpires raises his finger for a caught-behind. Jurel reviews instantly and it's seemingly thudding the thigh as it rushes to Jitesh. Not out - 34 needed in 3 overs to win for RR.

Riyan Parag c Rabada b Arshdeep Singh 23 (18b 1x4 1x6)

100 up for RR as Jurel drives Curran to mid-off for a single. Short ball angling to the hips and Parag flicks it through square for one run. In the air and dropped! Parag belts a slower-ball to long-on and Livingstone spills the catch as he runs in from the fence. Five singles from the over. And it's six for the over as Parag chips another slower ball past Curran.

Brar darts one in and Jurel pushes it back to the bowler. A single follows to deep mid-wicket. In the air and over point! There was room to cut and Parag slashes it just over the fielder at point for FOUR. He turns another one through mid-wicket for one run.

Even chasing a modest total, a few cheap overs can put the chasing team under pressure. That’s what seemed to be happening to Rajasthan Royals as Tanush Kotian, opening the innings in place of the regular Jos Buttler, stalled. Only 24 from 31 deliveries was not what was required. But once Liam Livingstone put him out of his misery, skipper Sanju Samson utilised his great form to inject some momentum into the innings. The run rate was just over six an over when he came in, and Samson got busy as soon as he came in. He took a special liking for Livingstone, who had been thrifty in his first couple of overs. A six and a four, one off the front foot and the other off the back, put the visitors in the driver’s seat again. Rabada comes around the stumps and finds the inside-edge off Jaiswal, no run. Rabada to Jaiswal, OUT! There's the wicket. Short ball outside off and Jaiswal slashes it straight to deep third for a straightforward catch. Jaiswal's sluggishness continues as RR lose their second. Riyan Parag is in at 4. Rabada nearly yorks him with an inch-perfect delivery first ball. Paraga manages to dig it out but Punjab review for an lbw.

Samson and Jaiswal get busy with a slew of singles. Good running between the wickets with Samson forcing Jaiswal into converting a couple of singles into twos for himself. 10 from the over.

Livingstone to Kotian, OUT! Kotian's hand finishes as a big hoick across the line goes awry as Livingstone hits the leg-stump with a slider. Sanju Samson is in at 3. Fuller ball outside off and Samson taps the ball to point. Back-of-a-length and Samson cuts it to short third, no run. Straighter this time nd Samson drives it to long-off for a single.

Tanush Kotian b Livingstone 24 (31b 3x4)

Harshal Patel into the attack

Kotian pushes the first ball to mid-off and sets off on a quick single to bring up RR's fifty-run opening stand of the season. A string of four singles and Kotian creams the ball off length for two runs, intercepted by Rabada in the deep.

The pressure creeps up on Kotian as Liam Livingstone runs through four dots. Length ball outside off and Kotian drives the ball to the deep for a single. Livingstone offers wide down leg. Jaiswal flicks the ball to deep mid-wicket and forces Kotian into a second run but a misfield in the deep converts the shot to FOUR runs.

Rabada tails one in and Kotian smites it over mid-on for FOUR.  A single to follow. Beaten again. Rabada offers the driving-length delivery but Jaiswal cannot connect yet again. 

Curran offers some room and Jaiswal frees his arms through the cut behind square for FOUR. A single to follow. Kotian continues to struggle as Curran squares him up with a nip-backer that rushes through the gate. A single follows and Curran sends in a high bumper to Jaiswal, signalled wide. Seven from the over.

Change of ends for Arshdeep

Slower ball in the slot and Jaiswal creams it through mid-off for FOUR. Arshdeep strays to the pads and Jaiswal flicks it down leg for two runs. Width from Arshdeep and Kotian slaps it through cover. A misfield earns him another run. Jaiswal follows up with a nudge down leg for one run. Short from Arshdeep and Kotian swivels his bat through the line for FOUR through mid-wicket.

Curran replaces Arshdeep

Kotian is under the pump with a couple of singles before he chips one to mid-on for a single. Curran cramps up Jaiswal with a couple of slower-deliveries. Short and wide but Jaiswal fails to tap the ball beyond cover. Just the one run from the over!

Kagiso Rabada into the attack

Kotian is put under pressure by three dots from Rabada and he reels in a quick run with a push to mid-off. Rabada overpitches and Jaiswal clips it crisply in front of square for FOUR. Beaten. Excellent response from Rabada as he moves one past the outside-edge as Jaiswal attempts for a hard drive through the off side.

Back of a length, Jaiswal taps it through cover and a misfield hands him two runs. A bit of room and Kotian taps the ball to point. Arshdeep follows with a wide down leg. Some shape from a straighter line and Kotian drives the ball to mid-off, no run. Fraction short and wide and Kotian dabs the ball behind point for FOUR and opens his account in the IPL.

Sanju Samson had an interesting night behind the stumps. Of course, early on was the moment when Atharva Taide skied one and what should have been Samson's catch was taken out of the gloves by Kuldeep Sen. A while later, he could have entered his name into the catch of the tournament contenders list. Kuldeep drew an outside edge off Liam Livingstone, the ball flew to Samson's right and he flung himself full length. The ball hit the edge of his gloves and popped out. But Samson's brilliance would eventually be the reason for Livingstone's dismissal. The Englishman was denied by his partner when attempting a second run. The turn wasn't quick enough, but Tanush Kotian's throw seemed to be far away from Samson. But the RR captain gathered the ball on half volley and flicked it quickly at the stumps to catch the batter short. While that dismissal surely shaved a few runs off Punjab's total, there'd be more high-catching chaos. Ashutosh Sharma skied one, and both bowler Avesh Khan and Samson rushed to it, and ended up colliding. There was no happy ending this time though as the catch was dropped, and then Ashutosh ended up adding a few precious boundaries in the end. - Vinayakk Mohanarangan

He overpitches and Ashutosh carves it through cover for FOUR. Boult lands one inside the tramline on the full but the umpire signals wide and RR review. The decision is reversed. Full toss and Ashutosh flicks it through square-leg but fails to reel in the second run. Brar shuffles across and gets some wood on ball for a single. Boult to Ashutosh, OUT! Boult rushes him with a sharp bouncer and Ashutosh gets a leading-edge to point off an attempted to pull and Punjab finish at 147.

Ashutosh Sharma c Maharaj b Boult 31 (16b 1x4 3x6)

It was turning out to be a soporific batting effort from Punjab Kings, as they showed why they are among the bottom few teams in the league. None of their early batsmen attempted to take the game on, to put the disciplined Rajasthan Royals bowlers off their game. There was no Shikhar Dhawan, but the skipper hadn’t set the tournament on fire. To put their struggles in perspective, there were no sixes hit for 14.4 overs before Jitesh Sharma managed to hit two in the space of three balls. When Liam Livingstone ended the 16th over with a four and a six of his own, the hosts seemed to be getting into gear, better late than never. But the run rate was still just over six an over, and when Jitesh perished soon after going for another big hit, Punjab Kings had no option but to exercise their Impact Player option sooner than they would have liked, as the in-form Ashutosh Sharma came in for Prabhsimran Singh. It put most of the onus of reaching a competitive total on Livingstone, who himself was returning to action after recovering from a hamstring injury. The skipper is not happy after having put in an early call. SIX! Ashutosh adds insult to injury as he muscles a length ball over mid-wicket for a maximum. An overthrow adds two runs and the Royals are fumbling on the field again. Short ball outside off and Ashutosh slices the ball over long-off for SIX! Ashutosh keeps strike with a single.

Chahal oversteps but walks without causing much harm. Fraction short and Ashutosh muscles it over long-on for SIX. Chahal to Ashutosh, OUT! Run out! Brilliant from Samson! Ashutosh flicks the ball to mid-wicket for a single but Livingstone wants too. Kotian collects the ball quickly and Ashutosh swiftly sends Livingstone. Samson collects the ball nicely and flicks it to the stumps and guess what, Livingstone's short of the ground by a few inches!

Avesh to Jitesh, OUT! Avesh rushes one in sharply and Jitesh mistimes the slog and sends a simple catch for Riyan Parag at mid-off as Rajasthan strike back firmly yet again. Ashutosh Sharma is in as the Impact Sub, replacing Prabhsimran. Ashutosh is off the mark with a single down the ground. Avesh tails the ball in and Livingstone flicks it through wide long-on for FOUR. A single to follow and Livingstone shall retain strike.

Jitesh Sharma c Parag b Avesh Khan 29 (24b 1x4 2x6)

Kuldeep hits the slot and Jitesh tonks it over long-off for SIX. He swings again but gets an inside-edge towards mid-on for a single. Livingstone is attempting to hack across the line but Kuldeep thuds the ball high onto the hip. Kuldeep overpitches and Livingstone scythes it through mid-wicket for FOUR. Length from Kuldeep and Livingstone smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a massive SIX - 100 up for Punjab!

Chahal lines the ball into the right-handers, draining any room. Four singles between Livingstone and Jitesh as Chahal forces them to the long-on fielder. Slower-ball on length and Jitesh steps out and carves out extra cover for SIX.

Maharaj waltzes through a brilliant fourth over, conceding only three runs to Livingstone and Jitesh. He bows out with figures of two for 22 as Rajasthan wield control over Punjab.

Kuldeep to Shashank, OUT! The short ball works! Kuldeep returns with a firm short ball and Shashank mistimes the pull to the deep. Jurel is below the ball yet again and he pouches it comfortably. Punjab lose half their side. Liam Livingstone is in at 7. Edged and dropped by Samson first ball! A sharp outside-edge and Samson puts in a full-length dive to his right but fails to hold on to the ball. Back-of-a-length from Kuldeep and Jitesh solidly taps it back towards the bowler, no run. Just the two runs from the over.

Maharaj tosses one up and Jitesh makes room to pump the ball down the ground for FOUR. He goes fuller and Jitesh drills it to long-off for a single. Maharaj goes flat outside off and Shahank wallops the ball over extra cover for another FOUR.

PBKS continues to tumble as Shashank Singh comes in at 6.  He's off the mark with a single. Loud shout as Maharaj pins a ball to the front pad as Jitesh misses on connecting the sweep. RR review but it turns to be umpire's call on wickets. Jitesh survives.

Kuldeep skims through a quiet over as he cramps up Curran and Livingstone. Fifty for Punjab as the players enter a break.

A length ball from Avesh Khan, angled across the left-handed Atharva Taide, found the top edge and went up high in the night sky, behind the striker's end. Wicketkeeper Sanju Samson put his gloves up immediately, gesturing for the catch and made his way close to the short-third. But Kuldeep Sen either didn't hear the call or his peripheral vision wasn't sharp enough to catch his captain. He put his arms out right over the gloves of Samson but managed to hold on. Samson had a brief quizzical look, then smiled. Avesh mouthed a 'abbey yaar!' in Kuldeep's direction.

When the ball goes high up in the air during a RR match, mind goes back to IPL 2023. In a match against GT, Wriddhiman Saha got a leading edge, that went straight up in the air and made its way back down, bang in the middle of the pitch. The bowler Trent Boult was the closest to it but he – originally – wanted nothing to do with it. Samson, Shimron Hetmyer and Dhurv Jurel converged, collided over one another and let the ball bounce out. Eventually, it looped over to Boult. Too many cooks and all that. - Vinayakk Mohanarangan

Avesh offers room and Taide taps it to point for a single. Avesh shortens his length and Bairstow finds minimal room to cut hard through point, settles for a single. Avesh overpitches and Prabhsimran slams it over mid-off for FOUR

Boult into his third. He maintains a fine line of attack to Prabhsimran from over the wicket. Bit of room outside off, Prabhsimran dabs the ball behind point but finds a leaping Keshav Maharaj stopping a boundary. Just three from the over.

He starts with a sharp, straight delivery that constricts Bairstow, no room whatsoever. A single to follow. Avesh to Taide, OUT! A bit of a mix-up but the catch is clean. Skiddy bouncer and Taide gets a skier as he heaves across the line. Samson moves to his left but gets in a tangle with Kuldeep who holds onto the ball despite a collision.

Atharva Taide c Sen b Avesh Khan 15 (12b 2x4)

Boult hits length and Taide marches forward to push the ball towards cover. Back-of-a-length and Taide works it to mid-on for a single. Boult overpitches and Bairstow leans into a drive down the ground for FOUR. Fiery bumper from Boult and Samson needs to put in a massive jump to stop the ball from parrying to the fence.

Sanju Samson: We'll bowl first, it looks like a decent wicket to bowl first. We've made a target to not think about the goal, focus on the process, work on building the team and we're doing well. A lot of challenges outside as well, we've many players missing from tonight's game. 90% of the game was good - Jos isn't 100%, Ash bhai is having a niggle, so Rovman and Kotian come into the XI.

Sam Curran - Shikhar picked up a niggle, that's why I'm here. We would have bowled first as well, but we'll now have to put the runs on the board. The balance has been good, we'd have liked to win a few more games, but the middle-order looks good, especially Shashank and Ashutosh. We've got exciting players and plenty of quality. We've Taide coming in for Shikhar tonight.

Shimron Hetmyer: (Discussions after the last game) It's just about not reflecting too much on it. We know what we did wrong, not wrong, we know where they (GT) excelled a little bit better than us in the last couple of overs. We thought that we were doing pretty fine for the first 16 overs and then mainly in the last four overs where they went ahead in the game. Just for us to continue to do the good things we have been doing so far. Not to dwell too much on the past, I forgot about that (previous season) until I kept hearing it on the TV. Just push that aside and think about one game at a time, focus on what we can control, which is going out and playing our best cricket. (On facing just 25 balls this season) I actually keep telling them (other batters) to keep continuing to do the good job they are doing so I don't have to go and waste energy, I just go and field and do the best that I can in the field. So fat it's been fantastic to sit inside and watch the guys do their jobs. Riyan has been a revelation for us so far, hope that he continues. The skipper - he's just doing what he does. And all the other guys have made runs as well, they have been doing a fantastic job. Myself, I am just inside, just looking on and trying my best to do what I need to do in training and just making sure that if I do get the opportunity, I am all ready to go.

Daren Ganga analyses the pitch: Only two matches so far at this venue and we are playing on pitch number 4 today. 75m straight boundary, while the square boundaries are at 64m and 67m respectively. There is a tinge of green grass, 100% black soil, so water retention is higher. Some seam movement for the seamers who should dominate here. You'll need to bowl in that good length and the line should be around off or just outside off. There is a little bit of dew factor, so you would want to bowl first, but you can win by batting first as well. 180 should be a par score on this wicket.

Yuzi Chahal is three short of becoming the first bowler to get 200 IPL wickets. He is also atop the Purple Cap race with Jasprit Bumrah with 10 wickets.
