Megh Raj Wadhera has never skipped a match his grandson Nehal played. With the senior Wadhera carried a notepad and a pen to write ‘ball-by-ball commentary’ of every ball Nehal has played. He has been doing this for the past fifteen years.
“It has become a routine for my father. He is his biggest cheerleader. He will note down every minute detail. His body language, his shots, his running between the wickets, how he gets out. He is not an expert but just a fan of his grandson, and in the evening, the duo will sit down and they will talk about the game. Both my father and my son are obsessive about cricket,” Kamal Wadhera, Nehal’s father, told the Indian Express from Ludhiana.(read more)

Of all his sixes - he ended with 6 maximums on the night - it was the one to welcome Mohammad Shami for his last over that had the stadium spellbound and shell shocked. Shami bowled it full and outside the off stump and Suryakumar Yadav opened the face of the bat and sent it, the bat handle pivoting on the ball of the wrist, over deep backward point. It got Sachin Tendulkar deconstructing the wrist work in the dug-out, and the whole Titans team including Shami applauding him at the completion of his century 103* (49). This was Mr 360 reaching infinity.

Rashid Khan is called upon in the middle overs usually, but his services were summoned early after Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan went after the Titans' pacers. He would strike right after the strategic break, tossing it outside off as Rohit Sharma prodded at it and Rahul Tewatia would pouch a sharp catch at slips. Four balls later, Ishan Kishan was slow to get his bat in line to a fast and full delivery and was trapped plumb in front, packing off both openers. Next to go was Nehal Wadhera after a six to long on off Noor Ahmad. Rashid bowled it short and wide and Nehal looking to cut it, dragged the inside edge onto the stumps. Last season Rashid had 19 wickets, this year he crossed that mark by the 11th game, and added three more to his tally.

The second ball was moving away a tad, and Rohit slashed at the width scything it to the cover boundary. Two balls later, Mohit bowled it a touch short and on the middle, and Rohit leant back and whacked it behind the bowler for the second four. On what was looking like a flat pitch, Rohit cleanly struck the last length delivery over deep square leg for a 97 m monster six to end the 14-run over. MI: 37/0 after 3 overs
Rohit Sharma goes huge after Mohit Sharma lands it on a good length and swats this one over deep square leg. He deposits this one into the stands for a 97-metre biggie and that is a record for Rohit as well.

Gujarat Titans have won the toss and opted to bowl first. 'We will bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, dew could have an effect, so chasing could be ideal. We realise the importance of every game, just need to stick to our plans and play good cricket. It's important to learn the lessons from your losses, rectify and don't repeat it. You do make mistakes in such a long tournament. God has been kind with our injuries. Same XI tonight' - Says Hardik Pandya at the toss
'A red soil pitch today. 61m and 67m square boundaries while the straight is at 72m. The pitch looks similar to that of the other night against RCB. Little bit of moisture on top of the surface which means there could be a bit of swing, especially in the first 3-4 overs and a hint of turn if the captain is brave enough to go for spin in the powerplay. But this is a beautiful wicket, win the toss, bowl and chase down the target later on. No score is safe at this venue' - Sanjay Manjrekar and Aaron Finch, in their pitch report.
This season, the Wankhede has lived up to its reputation as a pitch that produces high scores. The average first-innings total is 196, and the bowlers have little support available to them. In the previous game, Jason Behrendorff took a few wickets with the new ball, which suggested some assistance during the powerplay’s early stages. When winning the toss, chasing is typically chosen, and in four of the five games played there, the team batting second has prevailed.
Mumbai Indians (Probable XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan(w), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Nehal Wadhera, Tilak Varma, Chris Jordan, Piyush Chawla, Kumar Kartikeya, Jason Behrendorff
Gujarat Titans (Probable XI): Wriddhiman Saha(w), Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya(c), Vijay Shankar, David Miller, Abhinav Manohar, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Mohit Sharma, Noor Ahmad, Mohammed Shami
The two teams have only faced off twice: in Brabourne 2022, MI prevailed by a score of five runs, and in Ahmedabad 2023, GT triumphed by a score of 55 runs. The current match-up is 1-1, but these sides have never played at the Wankhede before.
Suryakumar Yadav smashed a 35-ball 83 and his return to form is the biggest positive for MI, for whom the likes of Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green, Tim David and Tilak Varma have done the bulk of scoring.
Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri reckons it will be an emotional homecoming for Gujarat Titans' skipper Hardik Pandya who achieved stardom playing at Wankhede but defeating Mumbai Indians here is always tough for visiting teams. "Hardik's homecoming will be emotional. He will play a crucial match against the team at the ground where he rose to stardom. Hardik would like to prove a lot by leading his team to victory. This match will be really interesting as it will not be easy for GT to beat MI at their home and then MI would like to equalize the defeat in Ahmedabad and take a strong step towards the playoffs."
One major issue for MI this year has been their bowling which has conceded four consecutive totals above 200, and nearly did so versus RCB again. In the last three games here, opposition sides have raked up 214/8, 212/7 and 199/6, making the most of a flat wicket and perfect batting conditions -- something that GT would also like to target.
MI's best batter and captain Rohit Sharma has endured a lean patch with five single-digit scores on the trot! Sharma has just one half-century and 191 runs to show in 11 matches of IPL 2023.
For the first time in this IPL, five-time winners MI have looked promising as they rose to the third spot in the points table with a six-wicket thumping of Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday. The manner in which MI thrashed RCB -- chasing 200 inside 17 overs -- highlighted once again how successful their batting has been, even though for the second consecutive game they reshuffled the order in a bid to push their net run rate.
An upbeat Mumbai Indians are likely to be tested to the hilt by table-toppers and defending champions Gujarat Titans in a vital Indian Premier League match on Friday. Stay tuned for live updates
