MI vs DC highlights, IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 29 runs

It was a lot of hard work. We had to clear our minds and make sure that we believed. We will be making tactical changes here and there but this will be our 12 and settling our team now is important. There's a lot of love and care going around in the change room. Belief and backing each other is the attitude out there. Everyone believed we need just one win. It was an amazing start today, always wonderful to get 70 odd in 6 overs. The way everyone chipped in when the opportunity was coming was good to see. That was some hitting na (On Romario's heroics). He won us the game. Difference was Romario v Delhi Capitals. I like him. Always has a smile on his face, doesn't run away. (On why Hardik didn't bowl) I am fine. I'll be bowling at the right time, we had everything covered today so did not have to roll my arms overs.

I think we played according to our potential, this is the sort of cricket we are known to play for. It wasn't easy after the batting powerplay, the fielders go back and we decided that the batting powerplay was the right time to attack the bowlers. He has been working hard (on Romario Shepherd), wasn't playing, but always gave 100% at the nets. We were looking towards that one over, we know he's very powerful and has the ability to clear boundaries. We've been talking with the coaches on all departments (of the game), as a keeper, it's important to get the field placings right. It's difficult for the captain, he can't look at the angles, that's where I can chip in as a wicket-keeper.

Definitely we were in contention, but we didn't have enough runs in the batting PP, especially when you're chasing such a big score., We batted well in the next few overs, but it's not easy to constantly score 15 rpo for many overs. Yes, we had a few bad overs (with the ball), but it does happen at times. The bowlers needed to bowl into the wicket, slower ones and the variations were important. The bowlers needed to understand the conditions well. I think we need to improve on a few areas - death over bowling and our batting as well.

That's it. Coetzee picked up three wickets in the final over to close the innings. It is the first win for Mumbai in the tournament. However, there are plenty of things that need to be improved going forward. As per Delhi, they have been there and thereabouts but once again did not have enough in them to get over the line. 

Delhi needs 34 runs to win which is a bit too many to get especially given that Stubbs won't be on strike. What an innings he has played here. This is has been power-hitting of the highest quality from the South African. Unfortunately, it might be coming on a losing cause. 

Bumrah picks up two wickets and gives away just 22 runs on a night the ball has been flying into all parts of the ground. Excellent stuff from the premium pacer. Meanwhile, Stubbs has gotten to his 50 another outstanding individual performance in the afternoon.

That Jasprit Bumrah bowls a mean yorker is no surprise. That Jasprit Bumrah continues to dismiss even well-set batters who know full well that a mean yorker is always around the corner, is the stuff of genius. 

Brought back into the attack when Delhi were stitching together a decent partnership, Bumrah produced one of those heat-seeking missiles from his armoury. It's like his brain has a radar and the ball is programmed to hit the base of the stumps when he demands it to. Shaw was batting on 66 off 39 balls, was starting to find the gaps more regularly. But the gap Bumrah needed was just millimeters between the bottom of the bat and in front of the stumps. The ball was angled in, nearly took Shaw's toe off from his backfoot, then completely took the leg stump off the ground. And in complete contrast to the delivery, as per usual, the celebration was once more just a leap and a gentle smile.

Porel and Pant have fallen in quick succession for Capitals now. While Stubbs is playing a blinder from one end the batters from the other end are not able to support him. They need another cameo here if they want to get anywhere close to the target.

At one stage, it seemed that Delhi Capitals had already started preparing for next season, in only their fifth match. After a thrashing by more than a 100 runs in their previous game, they conceded another huge total, but showed scant urgency in making a match of it. The batting line-up they put out against Mumbai Indians showed how thin their resources look on paper. David Warner is key to their ambitions, but advancing years and an absence of game-time in longer formats don't let him be the destructive force he was in his prime. Prithvi Shaw is still hit-or-miss, but what brings forth their lack of firepower is young Abhishek Porel at No.3 when the team is chasing 235. Other sides have much more pedigreed and experienced batsmen coming at that vital position. Their net run rate took a big hit  against Kolkata Knight Riders, and needed another of their big guns up front to make a match of it. They had Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs to come, but Axar Patel at No. 6 seems a bit high, and Kumar Kushagra as an Impact batsman shows that the squad has its limitations. If things don't turn around quickly, this season could be another write-off.

Stubbs has started his innings well here. He is looking in good touch and middling the ball nicely. Mumbai is continuing to get the job done with slower balls however, Stubbs is waiting for the ball to come to him and than smack it into the stands.

Piyush Chawla has come back for the second over and he has been smacked for a couple of sixes by Tristian Stubbs. The situation is set up nicely for the South African. This game is still very much in the balance and Hardik will be tested as a captain on how he will rotate his bowlers from here on.

Hardik turns to Bumrah and he does his thing. He bowls a toe-crusher and picks Shaw. There is absolutely nothing the Delhi opener could have done about it and the game demanded that kind off magic and it is Bumrah again who delivers.

This partnership is now looking ominous for Mumbai Indians. Porel has given a chance which Coetzee dropped and there have been a few mis-fields in that last over as well. This is good from the Capitals they are putting sustained pressure on Mumbai Indians.

Shaw has gone past his fifty now and is looking in sublime touch after Powerplay. Nabi delivered a decent over until that final ball where he delivered a full toss which was deposited into the stands. Mumbai needs to be a bit careful here as the partnership is looking ominous at the moment.

Coetzee has been brought into the attack and he delivers an expensive over here. Runs are coming for Capitals but they need bigger overs than what they are getting now. Given the way Wankhede is both these Indian youngsters might target the spinners of the opposition.

Piyush Chawla took the ball from the other end after Powerplay and Shaw went after him. That was the over which Capitals needed and they need 2-3 more overs of such magnitude in the next 20 minutes or so. Shaw needs to get a few runs too irrespective of the result of the game.

Mohammed Nabi has been brought into the attack and the seasoned T20 campaigner has started well here. He did not let the boundaries away which is a win for Mumbai because of the total they are defending. Prithvi Shaw who is set needs to go after the bowling.

The end of the Powerplay would have been a decent one if the runs they are chasing are taken out of context but it already seems like Delhi Capitals are well behind in this game. Delhi needs to be a lot more proactive they need to have a passage of play where they need to get a couple of 20 runs plus overs.

This has been smart bowling from Mumbai Indians instead of pitching the ball up they have pulled their lengths back and are mixing up their slower ones which the Capitals are struggling to deal with. We have to wait and see how spinners will operate in the 2nd innings.

This is a slower start for the Capitals chasing those many runs they would have hoped to start the innings on an over drive which did not happen. Porell has walked into the middle more than a big inning the situation demands a cameo from him. 

David Warner looked aggressive and tried to hit the ball through cow corner however, the lack of pace in the delivery meant the ball flew in the air. Shepard just cannot do no wrong today. An important wicket for Mumbai as David Warner was looking dangerous.

Bumrah starts with a slower ball on length outside off as Shaw glides it towards short third. Nip-backer from Bumrah and Shaw guides it towards cover, dot. A dipping delivery in the blockhole and Shaw digs it out. Bumrah angles one in and Shaw steers it down leg for FOUR. Shaw makes room to cut but Bumrah follows him with a quick bumper. Another slower one and Shaw fails it to find the gaps, just the four from it.

Short and wide and Shaw cuts the ball over the slip-cordon for SIX! Fuller delivery outside off and Shaw taps it to the cover fielder. Straighter deliver on to the stumps and Shaw covers the line and directs it to the mid-wicket fielder. Three dots and Shaw retains strike with a quick single.

Tim David: One went out of the ground and everyone in the stands enjoyed that. Great effort today, we had to stand up after a tough start to the season. Shepherd put the hammer down in that last over. Off pace deliveries didn't feel like bouncing up high. Perfect finish (last over) and we have got some momentum I thought I was going to die when that ball came towards me (high full toss off Nortje that he managed to hit for six).

And a SIX to finish, Shepherd slices Nortje over wide long-on for SIX - 32 from the final over!

Ishant starts with a wide outside off. Ishant overpitches and Shepherd drills the ball through mid-off for FOUR this time. He follows up with a yorker. Shepherd digs it out and sneaks in a single. Another wide from Ishant outside off. Full toss and David flicks the ball for SIX over square. David is appealing for a waist-high no ball though and MI review. The decision stands. Loose and wide from Ishant and David creams it through cover for FOUR more - 19 from the over!

Another loose delivery down leg and David scythes it to the deep for FOUR. High no ball over the waist and David still parries it over fine leg with a reactionary pull for SIX! Nortje follows up with a wide and the free hit continues. Short ball and David swats it to wide long on for a single. A couple of slower bouncers and Hardik fails to put bat on ball. Nortje to Hardik, OUT! Hardik perishes to the bouncer this time as he pulls it to deep square-leg.

Tim David pounces onto Richardson's slower one. Smacks him wide over long on for six. Two wides in the over as well. Just what MI need at this stage. 12 come from the over. 150 up for hosts. 150/4, with three more overs to go.

A juicy half volley from Jhye Richardson and Hardik Pandya welcomes it with both hands. Slashes it wide of the fielder at cover and gets four runs for it. 

From the other end, Ishant Sharma returns back into the attack. Just the seven conceded off the 15th. MI are 138/4.

Khaleel Ahmed back into the attack. Tilak Varma is caught at backward point, couldn't not engage with a cut shot and has found Axar Patel. MI lose a fourth wicket. Khaleel gets his first for the day. 123/4 after 13 overs. 

Tushar Bhaduri: Absence makes the heart grow fonder. That was the case with Suryakumar Yadav, who had been out of action since December. The return of the No.1 T20I batsman in the world was awaited not just by the Indian team, but also by Mumbai Indians, who had suffered a hat-trick of defeats to open their campaign. But Yadav's comeback to the IPL lasted a mere two deliveries, as his ring-rust became obvious. He had had a few practice matches at the National Cricket Academy, but that would not prepare anyone to face high-quality pace in a competitive game. Anrich Nortje is himself finding his way back from injury. The South African speedster welcomed Yadav with a yorker at pace, which the batsman struggled to pick. It thudded into his pads, prompting an appeal from the bowler. But it was clearly sliding down leg and there was a hint of an inside edge as well. Yadav has made his name taking the bowling on, and decided to do the same. He tried to hit Nortje over the infield, but got nowhere near the middle of the blade, as substitute fielder Jake Fraser-McGurk timed his leap to perfection at mid-on to grab the chance on the edge of the circle. Yadav was back for a two-ball duck and would have to wait to make an impact.

Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma know each other for a long time. They were part of the senior Indian set-up as early as in the mid-2010s. They would have faced off countless times in the nets, and though their international commitments may have curtailed their engagements at the domestic level, there's a level of familiarity as both have been part of the IPL since its very inception. That familiarity worked for Rohit, at least at the start of the second over of the Mumbai Indians innings. After a wide down the leg-side, the India captain rightly predicted what was coming next. It was a length ball outside off, and Rohit got down on one knee to sweep it over short fine-leg. The next ball was lofted, quite easily, over mid-off. As there was no one back, another boundary ensued. The next delivery would have reminded Delhi Capitals of the nightmare in Visakhapatnam a few days ago, as a wayward delivery down legside conceded five wides. But the experienced pacer made an impressive comback after conceding 14 off two legal deliveries. Three of the four subsequent deliveries forced went past the outside edge, while the other one was ushed tentatively to cover. In the final analysis, it was a good over for Mumbai Indians, but the individual clash between two veterans didn't have a clear winner.

Axar pulls off a stunner. Axar slides in a quicker one an Kishan pulls it sharply down the ground and Axar nabs it with his left-hand with sharp reflexes. Kishan is in disbelief as he trudges back. Tilak Varma is in at 5.

Nortje strays to the pads and Kishan flicks it to deep fine leg for a single. Short from Nortje and Hardik belts the ball through mid-wicket for another FOUR. Hardik gives a charge and slices the ball to deep cover for one run. Another bumper from Nortje and Kishan swivel-pulls it to the stands for SIX! Kishan sets off on a quick single after tapping to cover and a fumble from Axar helps him reel the single.

Axar into his third. A couple of singles to start the over. Axar overpitches and Hardik drills the ball through cover for a blistering FOUR.

Anrich Nortje into the attack. Kishan finds a single. Nortje to Suryakumar, OUT! A two-ball duck for Suryakumar! He attempts to pump the ball over mid-on but mistimes the quicker ball to the fielder. Not a happy homecoming for SKY. Hardik Pandya is in at 4. Nortje forces Hardk to dab the ball to point. He sets off on a single but is quickly sent back by a sharp throw. Width from Nortje and Hardik drives through cover for two runs. Nortje slants down leg and Hardik elegantly drives the ball past mid-wicket for a single.

Flatter ball from Axar and Kishan sweeps it fine for FOUR. A single to follow. Axar reels in three dots to Rohit. Bowled him! Rohit attempts to chip down the track and Axar darts in a quicker delivery that skids onto the off-stump. A superb knock comes to an end and Rohit misses out on his half-century.

Rohit shuffles across for a heave but the ball thuds into him and he is in some pain. BANG! There comes the riposte as he smokes a length ball outside off over the square-leg fence for SIX! SIX more as Rohit nonchalantly flicks Jhye from a fuller length outside off over square leg. Slower ball on length, Rohit makes room to attack but finds the mid-off fielder while picking up a single.

Khaleel tails the ball in and Kishan toes it over mid-wicket for two runs. Khaleel cuts the room this time and Kishan dabs the ball to point. Fuller delivery outside off and Kishan finds the point fielder once again. Short from Khaleel and Kishan whacks it past mid-on for FOUR. In the slot and Kishan mistimes the chip over mid-off and reels in only two runs. Low full toss and Kishan drills it down the ground for another FOUR - 12 from the over!

Ishant starts with a wide slanting down leg. Ishant wafts one in on the full and Rohit pre-empts and ramps the ball over short fine leg for FOUR. Fuller ball outside off and Rohit chips the ball over mid-off for FOUR this time. Ishant slants another one down leg and Pant cannot save it from running for FIVE wides. Ishant straightens his line and beats Rohit's outside-edge this time from the fifth-stump channel. Beaten again. Rohit attempts a nimble shuffle but Ishant cramps him up with an excellent delivery that kicks up from length.

Bright, sunny afternoon in Mumbai. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan will have their task cut out in the PowerPlay. Rohit has had his troubles against Khaleel. Even Axar Patel and Ishant Sharma have had the wood over the Indian captain. Can he bounce back from the duck in the previous game today?

TOSS: Delhi Capitals win toss, opt to bowl

Hardik Pandya - We would have bowled first as well, but batting first is also not a problem, this wicket does look a bit drier. The ball might not come on nicely unlike in a night game. But there will be less swing and it should be good to bat. We don't want to put pressure onto us, but one win will give us a lot of confidence. Almost 18,000 young people are supporting us today, we're here to represent them and want them to go back home with a smile. Three changes for us - Surya is back, he replaces Naman. Romario replaces Mapakha and Nabi is in, he replaces Brevis. 

Rishabh Pant - We will bowl first. The wicket looks good, but you can chase any target here in Wankhede. We'll have to stick together as a team. I'm happy to be back, pleasure to be on the field in each and every game. Bowling is one department where we've been on and off, but it's hard for them in T20s. Just two changes for us.

"You go into the ground with a positive frame of mind and it's no different here at the Wankhede. The amount of love that the fans show here means a lot to us. The first three matches haven't been good for us, but we'll have to forget it. We still have 11 games and we need to think about the future. Two points today would be very important. I don't think it's a day match or a night game, I just back my strengths.
